Weekly News - November 17, 2023
Dear Middlebrook Families,
Budget season is in full-swing. We need all of our parents to be active participants in this process. This budgetary season brings another layer of challenge for our schools. The money we received from Covid-19 ends. This means that staffing and other programs that were once funded using this money will need to be paid for in our budget. Please make sure you attend our Board of Education meeting to learn more about the process and advocate for our children. Remember, once the Board of Education approves our budget, it moves to the First Selectman, Board of Finance, and Town Council. Contacting the Board of Finance and Town Council members to approve the budget is vital for all of our schools to provide the level of education our students deserve.
As we move closer to a day of Thanksgiving, it is important to know that gratitude is strongly and consistently aligned with happiness. Children and adults alike experience improved health, build strong relationships and feel more positive emotions. It is very easy for Middlebrook staff to walk the halls of our building and find many things to be grateful for; including our children and colleagues. When we gaze upon the art work displayed by Mrs. Jacovino, see children holding hands and skipping through the hallways, or see students offering one another kind words, we experience a wealth of emotions all contributing to our sense of gratefulness. Gratitude connects us to something larger than ourselves and allows us to acknowledge the good in our lives.
Fondly,
Ms. Ponte and Ms. Molloy

Classroom/School News
Kindergarten Writers
Students in Mrs. Moore's classroom are working diligently on narrative writing pieces. They are using the mechanics of a sentence, writing across pages and matching their illustrations to their words. What an amazing accomplishment due to hard work and a love for writing!
Grade 2 Writers
Students in Mrs. Abate's class became published authors this week. They have been learning how to craft personal narratives capturing a small moment. With tremendous pride, the children cradled their books and shared their excitement with one another.
School Assembly
Middlebrook was fortunate to have Krystina Dawson, District Mental Health Coordinator, and Dr. Rathey, School Psychologist, come to our school and present an assembly that focused upon such areas as emotions, feelings and regulation. Not only were the children moving to music and expressing themselves through art, but they had opportunities to hear the cello and listen to a story. We are so fortunate to have experts in the field working with our children.
Trumbull Rotary Visits Grade 3
Middlebrook students in Grades 3 enjoyed a visit from the Trumbull Rotary. Each year, the Trumbull Rotary has gifted dictionaries to all 3rd grade students in the Trumbull Public Schools. What a great resource for our students to help motivate reading and writing even more!

Fundraisers
Sneaker Drive!
Did you know that your gently worn sneakers could help Middlebrook?
Well, they can and here’s how…Our school is participating in a fundraiser where there is nothing to buy or sell; all we need is your support and your gently worn, used, or new sneakers (children's and adult's)!
Here’s how you can help:
Start in your closets at home and gather as many pairs of sneakers that you no longer want; maybe you’ve out-grown them, they’re out of style, or out of season. Every pair counts!
The sneakers that we collect will help raise money to support our program AND will help our environment by keeping sneakers out of landfills.
We will be setting up a box in the lobby soon, but start saving them now!

Event's Public Description: The COVID pandemic has removed structure, consistency and predictability in the lives of children and families around the world. Humans are more likely to thrive with these three elements, so when they are missing, the stress of everyday living rises. This online session will provide an overview of how stress affects the human brain and present some family-based strategies for helping children from birth to age 12 deal with stress.
