Mission Possible! - December 22, 2016
Thank you from your FMS EXPLO Team!
Mr. Chapman
From the Art Room
This Week we are playing catch up, and putting the finishing touches on a few projects. We will also be adding photos to our electronic portfolio by the end of the week so students will be asked to bring a tech device, phone, or chromebook to class Thursday and Friday, so that we can put this semester’s work in for safe keeping.
6th Grade This week we will be wrapping up our watercolor unit as well as our time together with our Andy Warhol factory project. Or Andy for Candy as I call it. It is a fun challenge for students to collaborate and work together.
7th Grade are working on their night and day movement project. This week we will work on getting the structure built on these and hopefully hung in the hall before break.
8th grade are working on getting caught up, as well as paper craft trees. They will also be working on small holiday inspired mini projects from now until break. They have worked very hard on everything I have thrown at them and looking forward to a new year, and new project ideas when we return.
WIN we are working on a short individualized project, that will span the next two weeks. We just finished our PBIS poster blitz, and hope to have them create a few more.
As always , if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. cchapman@fulton58.org

All student also continued to work on the keyboarding skills. 6th grade's current goal is 19 words per minute with 90% accuracy this week. 7th and 8th graders also worked on the keyboarding skills. Their goal is 31 wpm with 90% accuracy.
While some students have already met grade level goals, all students should practice to improve their skills. Students were instructed if they did not meet their minimum goal that they should practice at home. They may practice anytime at typingtraining.com. Students can even use their Chromebooks to practice anywhere they have an Internet connection. They all have their login information. If you have any issues logging on at home, please email me. You can monitor your child's progress at home and school by going to the reports menu after they have logged into Typing Training. Many computer students email to ask login information or for me to assign specific assignments on typingtraining.com. I welcome these emails and respond as soon as possible.
All students ended their week with Hour of Code on Friday. 6th graders got to have fun experiencing virtual reality apps.

Mr. Jackson
What a great time of year!!!! We have come away from Thanksgiving and the opportunity to reflect and give thanks for everything we have. We are quickly racing towards Christmas and the giving and receiving of gifts to loved ones. I found myself thinking of gifts that would be more than a month of enjoyment, or until the game was "beat". Enter the "cliche" library plug... books are possibly one of the perfect gifts. You can become anything, you can find any interest, you can master skills you wouldn't otherwise even have access to. Books remove limits, raise ability levels, and feed and energize our brains.
Check out this great link READING I found that works through some ways to encourage your students to read. Some fantastic recommendations with some very practical application. Enjoy the time, make memories, and grow together with your students.
Feel free to contact me at jjackson@fulton58.org with any questions or concerns.

FMS Guidance: Mrs. Garner & Mrs. Horstmeier
The information below was shared in our TIps for Teachers this week at FMS. We are always striving to provide active supervision at FMS.
PRACTICE: The process of monitoring learning and performance on classroom expectations and rules that incorporates moving, scanning and interacting with students.
RESEARCH STATES:
▶ Has a positive impact on student behavior in a variety of settings- including classroom
▶ May reduce incidents of minor problem behavior while increasing appropriate behavior
▶ May lead to increases in student engagement
▶ Allows for encouragement of students using expectations or appropriate behavior
There is a relationship between the number of supervisor - to - student interactions and the instances of problem behavior (Simonsen, Fairbanks, Briesch, Myers & Sugai, 2008).
What is it?
Active supervision is a monitoring procedure that uses 3 components (DePry & Sugai, 2002)
1. Moving Effectively
2. Scanning Effectively
3. Interacting Frequently
Active supervision, verbally and non-verbally, communicates to students the certainty that you do inspect what you expect.
Implementation
▶ Continuous movement.
▶ Proximity with students.
▶ Random or unpredictable.
▶ Include moving close to noncompliant students and possible targeted areas.
▶ Demonstrate interest in students, assist with learning tasks, provide feedback.
SCANNING
▶ Visually sweep all areas of the room to observe all on a regular basis.
▶ Make brief eye contact with students in more distant locations of the room.
▶ Look and listen for signs of a problem.
INTERACTING
▶ Positive contact: Friendly, helpful, proactive, non-contingent, frequent delivery rate.
▶ Positive reinforcement: Immediate and contingent on behavior, frequent delivery rate.
Active Supervision monitoring practices
Practice What it looks like
Moving Effectively
When supervising work or activities, circulate among students.
Scanning Effectively
Frequently and intentionally look around at students
Interacting Frequently
While moving and scanning you should also frequently interact with students.

In Progress
1. I have designed the classroom floor plan to allow for ease of movement for Active Supervision.
2. I continually monitor all areas of the room by moving and interacting frequently and strategically.
3. I continually monitor all areas of the room by scanning and interacting frequently and strategically.
4. When designing a lesson, I consider student groupings, location and activity level.
5. I provide positive contact, positive and corrective feedback while moving around the room.
6. 80% of my students can tell the classroom expectations and rules.
