Spring Fever is in the Air at MPES!
Also, please speak with your child about their shoelaces and leaving them alone during the day. Many students are untying their shoes and even taking the laces completely out of their shoes! This creates a distraction to learning and becomes a safety concern. Please double knot your child's shoelaces if your child doesn't know how to tie their own shoes. Please work with your child to learn how to tie their own shoes and dress themselves. Students are expected to be able to snap, button and zip their own clothing and book bags.
Thank you for your understanding and support as we are continue teaching and learning at MPES!
What's coming up next week:
Next week in reading, your child will revisit many previous learned skills such as identifying the main idea and details, the beginning, middle and end, characters and setting of stories. Students are going to be comparing and contrasting similar texts. As well as retelling stories. We will also discuss the problem and solution in a story.
In word work, we will begin to work on sorting common objects into categories (e.g., shapes, foods) to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent.
In writing, we will continue learning about opinion writing. Students are learning how to use I think...., I prefer.... and I believe..... to start their sentences. They need to be able to write at least three reasons for their opinion and to complete the piece with a conclusion. At this time, I am looking for clear ideas and organization, spacing between words, grade appropriate language and spelling, and grade appropriate use of conventions.
Many students are rushing to write their names and simple words. You can help with this at home by reinforcing legible handwriting with your student. Students need to be able to write words using correct letter formation and place them on the lines correctly. This is a skill that is necessary for first grade learning!
In math, we will begin learning about addition. We will learn how to represent addition with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, verbal explanations, expressions and/or equations. We will also find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, any number from 1 to 9 by using objects or drawings, and recording the answer with a drawing or equation.
In science, we will continue to learn about living and nonliving things. Your child will be able to tell you if something is living or nonliving based on its physical attributes as well as be able to explain the characteristics of living things. The living and nonliving assessment is on Wednesday, March 13th. We will then move onto learning about mammals.
