AUSD RESPONDS TO HURRICANE HARVEY

Hurricane Harvey brought devastation and catastrophic flooding to the Houston area. As a District, we have reached out to colleagues in Houston to see how we may assist. We have been in touch with the principal of Burnett Elementary, a Pre-K-4 school, in Houston whose school community was hit hard by the storm.

As Mr. Lee, the principal of Burnett, shared in a letter to Dr. Newman, "We were one of the last campuses to be assessed because the roads to the school were all flooded. We were an island sitting in the middle of an ocean. The deepest parts of the neighborhood was six feet deep." Click here to read the letter from Burnett Elementary.

Beginning later this week, we will be launching a District wide letter writing and fund raising effort to adopt Burnett and support their relief efforts.

They have been hosting cook outs at their school to ensure that everyone who needs food is fed. They have specifically requested letters to their students, parents and businesses as well as funds to help support the recovery efforts of their families and students. Each school site will be working to support the efforts to help Burnett Elementary.

In addition to supporting Burnett Elementary, we will be collecting can foods for the Houston Food Bank, which is running low on supplies and are in desperate need of food. Boxes will be set up on each campus until September 15. Stay tuned for more information from the principal of your child's school.

5th GRADERS TO ATTEND JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT BIZ TOWN

We are excited to share that ALL of our 5th graders will attend Junior Achievement Biz Town this year. Biz Town is a 10,000 sq. foot mini-city in which kids discover how the "real world" works. Students will get a chance to work in one of 21 businesses, make personal financial decisions for their business, hold business meetings, pay taxes and donate to charity.

Biz Town is a culminating activity after students complete four weeks of curriculum and preparation in the classroom , where students learn how to be a citizen, how an economy works, how to apply for a job and run a successful business.

This interactive, project-based program not only teaches students how to manage their own personal finances and the importance of becoming a successful professional within our community, but it also empowers them to take responsibility for their professional and educational futures! Stay tuned for more information.

4th GRADERS TO BUILD TREBUCHETS

We are pleased to share that all fourth graders this year will participate in the Pumpkin’ Chunkin’ workshop, sponsored by the the Alpine Education Foundation. This day will consist of small groups of students building their very own trebuchet followed by time spent launching different sized items across the SHES and CELC field. This fun and innovate workshop will cover the history of the trebuchet, and the physics and engineering involved in its use. Look for a notice from your child’s teacher if you are interested in chaperoning this unique opportunity.

LUNCH PAYMENTS ONLINE

We have made it easy to make lunch payments, view purchase history, and receive low balance alerts. For your convenience, you can also setup automatic payments to replenish your child's cafeteria funds. You can find the link to pay online on the AUSD website or by clicking here.

DUAL IMMERSION PARENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE FORMING

We are in the process of forming a Dual Immersion Parent Advisory Committee (DIAPC). The goal of the DIPAC is to help ensure that parent voices are a central component of our planning as we develop our middle school dual immersion program. This committee will serve in an advisory role contributing information, conducting surveys, sharing ideas, and helping formulate a plan for the future. If you are interested in participating on the committee please contact Mrs. Maier, principal of SHES at ymaier@alpineschools.net. The first meeting of the committee will be held on October 3 at 5:30 @ SHES.

JMMS THEME FOR THE YEAR - STRONGER TOGETHER

The JMMS staff have been focused on developing a new theme to support their work on enhancing a positive school culture for our students. As part of our work to ensure a safe and positive culture, our students will be participating in a Student Leadership Summit and several assemblies this week. These activities were rescheduled to this week due to an illness with our TeenTruth speaker.

COLLEGE SPIRIT DAYS EVERY MONDAY

We will be implementing College Spirit Days on our campuses every Monday will this year. We want our students to begin thinking about college and beyond every week in which they are on our campuses. We also want to encourage our students to reach higher and be college bound. Students are encouraged to wear a college shirt or gear every Monday. So, connect with your college or a college your child is interested in and buy a college t-shirt.

We are pleased to share that AUSD was awarded a grant of just over $90,000 to help purchase a new school bus. The new bus arrived last week and is awaiting CHP inspection. We look forward to seeing our students on the bus shortly.
