Term 1, Week 8, Tuesday 22 March 2022
Tena koutou e te whānau o Kohia Terrace School
Welcome to Lucas, who started in Room 1 on Monday.
A very big THANK YOU to Kevin and Winnie (Anna’s family) for their generous donation of 1200 child-size masks. It was very much appreciated and so reflective of the type of community we have.
The Year 5 students are in their final preparations before leaving for Houghton’s Bush Camp in Muriwai tomorrow morning. Students will be visiting the gannet colony, exploring the beach and engaging in a series of outdoor activities led by Bigfoot Adventures, and then of course there is the excitement of eating camp food and sleeping in cabins. Thank you to the teachers and parent helpers who are supporting this learning opportunity outside the classroom. Camp is a highlight of the year for many.
As you may have heard in the media, the new Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum was launched this week. There are now specific knowledge-based programme outcomes for students to achieve across the year levels. This is a significant change in content and structure from previous curriculum models and is likely to be reflected in upcoming revisions for other learning areas (including Social Sciences, English and Maths). Schools are able to use both national and local contexts through which to explore this knowledge. We have already spent time during our initial Teacher Only Days at the start of the year exploring some of the historical narratives relating to our local area and will be working with our Kāhui Ako to develop this further. Our charter for 2022 makes provision for this mahi. Also, please note that we have a Teacher Only Day on Friday 3rd June.
You never know when Alison will be at the gate with Park and Walk house point vouchers – keep up the walking; it really is making a difference.
– Catherine
Azoombly Friday at 9.00am
A reminder that we have our AZOOMBLY on Friday (link attached). We will be presenting the graduation certificates and badges to our newly trained student coaches.
COVID Update
As we are seeing in wider Auckland, we have seen a significant reduction in the number of students with COVID. All those who have recently tested positive were absent from school during their 48-hour infectious period, which has minimised the opportunity for transmission within classes. Almost all students in our current case numbers (8) have contracted the illness through household contacts. This is reassuring.
We expect all students to attend school unless they are required to isolate. With four weeks to go until the end of term we are focusing deeply on our learning programmes and are working hard to make up shortfalls caused by the extended lockdown last year.
As we have had no recent ‘in-school’ transmission, we are freeing up the playgrounds a little, from today, with the removal of the specific year-group play areas. This will bring some degree of normality to our play times which I am sure the students will appreciate. However, we will be maintaining our rigid health processes in classrooms, with hand sanitiser upon entry, defined seating areas, regular time outside each block (weather permitting) and limited time with the other year group buddy class. If the current trend continues, we will review that next week.

Netball 2022
A reminder that Netball season is starting and we are setting up Kohia Terrace teams!
If you pre-registered by filling in the Google form, I have emailed you a direct link to the Auckland Netball registration form. If you have not registered, it is not too late!
Netball is offered for all genders from Year 2 to 8 at Windmill Courts, just down the road from Kohia Terrace School. It is a great chance to get your child into a team sport, and keep them safe at this time, by playing with students from their own school. Boys make excellent netball players, and playing netball can help develop strategies needed in other team sports such as basketball and football. Games are played outside and covid restrictions around contact tracing and vaccine passes will be followed. Games are played on the following days:
Year 2: Thursday 4:00pm | 4:45pm
Year 3 & 4: Thursday 4:00pm | 4:55pm | 5:50pm | 6:45pm
Year 5 & 6: Wednesday 4:00pm | 4:55pm | 5:30pm | 6:15pm
Year 7 & 8: Monday 4:00pm| 4:45pm | 5:30pm | 6:15pm
If you would like to register your child for netball, please fill in this registration form: https://www.sporty.co.nz/viewform/190457
