THURSDAY NOTE
And just like that September comes to a close! I can't believe we've already been in school for a whole month. It has been such a great start to the school year!
Next Wednesday is curriculum night! Each classroom will hold the same presentation twice during the evening so if you have more than one child at Love Creek you could sit in on at least two presentations. One presentation will be held from 5:30-6 and the same presentation will occur again from 6-6:30. Please plan to attend a session in the CAP classroom where I will share information pertaining to CAP instruction and information.
Parent conferences are right around the corner. This year, evening conferences will be held on Thursday, October 12th and new this year, conferences will also be held the morning of Friday, October 13th. These conferences will be student-led meaning your child will lead the conference by sharing their data binders, work they've completed, and additional information about CAP. Please visit http://signup.com/go/dcOZXmJ to sign up for a conference day and time that works for you and your child.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Global Read Aloud
THANK YOU to all those who have purchased a copy of the book for your child. We will begin reading on Monday so if you are able to pick up a copy this weekend that would be great. I have a couple more on order, too. Thank you for supporting reading in CAP!
Reading
This week, the students were introduced to four of the six signposts (Aha Moment, Tough Questions, Words of the Wiser, and Contrast and Contradictions). Have your child tell you a little about each of them! During conferences students will share more about these Signposts and show you the book they are making with anchor charts for each signpost.
Math
Remember to think before you do
4th Grade
We continued to work with large numbers and created a number line in the classroom that went across the front of our classroom! The student then worked together to decide how to label the number line. Next week, they will determine the number of miles it would take to travel to a favorite destination and complete the number line.
All the 4th graders did a great job comparing LARGE numbers using the symbols <,>, and =. I was also excited to see everybody did well on their final assessment of writing numbers in standard, expanded, and word form!
Subtraction is still a work in progress! If you have any free time and want to work with them at home, practicing subtraction strategies including the standard algorithm would be great. As you are practicing the algorithm, please ask your child to talk about place value as they regroup the numbers.
5th Grade
This week, students practiced a variety of division strategies including partial quotients. This strategy is a step before learning the long division algorithm. Some students have shared their understanding of long division and they may use this strategy if they choose. We have discussed the strategy in class and some students were curious how it worked so I encouraged others to practice the strategy if they want. The long division algorithm is not expected to be mastered until 6th grade, though, so they do not need to know it. Fifth graders ARE expected to be able to use partial quotients or another appropriate an efficient strategy for division. During our division lessons we also talked about the importance of interpreting and representing remainders in division problems, and practiced turning remainders into fractions. Students were blown away with the idea that the fraction line is really another division symbol!
