2021-2022 School Start Update- Welcome Back to School!

Well the fireweed blooms are reaching the top, a reliable indicator here in Alaska that school is about to start! Hopefully you were able to enjoy this wonderful summer and experience all that Alaska has to offer.

As we return to school the school district has prepared options for parents to consider for their child's education. Students will be enrolled in in-person learning by default, however parents may also enroll their child in eLearning, or BEST homeschool options. For more information about each of these please visit the school district page here.

This year we are preparing to welcome students back into the school building for full days, five days a week. Masking is optional, and we are following the "3 Cs" for school this year; Courteous, Cautious, and Clean. I have collected a few of the questions and answers below in a Frequently Asked Questions format:

1) Masking: Will children enrolled in Eielson AFB schools be required to wear masks the entire school day or, will they be optional, per the school board decision?

The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District expects that when staff and students are on the campus they are to follow school board policy. The schools are not DOD schools so they are an island of the school district within the boundaries of the base/post. This means masking is an option at the schools on Fort Wainwright and Eielson Air Force base. They do, however expect staff, students and parents, when off of the school campus to follow all rules for the installation. Students will be required to wear masks on school buses due to federal requirements.

2) Is it true that the school board will revisit the masking subject on August 16, thus making a decision two days prior to the school year?

The FNSBSD School Board has a work session scheduled for August 16, however there is not yet a published agenda. Agendas for upcoming meetings are found on the School Board page here.

3) What will be the guidance when a child in a classroom tests positive for COVID? Will the child and his entire family (even if vaccinated) be required to quarantine/virtually learn for two weeks? Will this include siblings?

When there is a positive case in a classroom we will follow the recommendations of Public Health and inform the school community to the best of our ability, while maintaining the confidentiality of persons concerned. Parents and caregivers will be encouraged to seek information from their health care provider regarding the proper course of action for their own family. Please see the district flyer below.

4) Will students return to a normal schedule with regard to recess?

Students will be returning to a full schedule, 5 days a week. Students will have Precess before school and a 30 minute recess in conjunction with lunch. Since masks are optional, they may or may not choose to wear a mask during recess.

5) If having PE, must they wear a mask while exercising?

Masks are optional, so students may or may not choose to wear a mask, including during Physical Education class.

Please See the school district page at for additional information.
