Dataplaces: Geographic Data in Your Community
Dataplaces: Geographic Data in Your Community
An Enrichment Course for High School Students
Saturday, December 10, 2022: 11 am to 1 pm
Leventhal Map & Education Center at the Boston Public Library
Main Branch in Copley Square
How do maps encourage us to think about distance? Is this different from how you experience distance? Where do borders and boundaries—around neighborhoods, cities—begin and end? How are these made and how do these areas affect our sense of belonging? How can design help us better see ourselves and our communities?
This enrichment course, designed for students in grades 9-12, will introduce students to key concepts in mapping and data science using examples drawn from Boston—no experience needed! Students will develop informed perspectives on the relationship between widespread data collection and democracy; how political geography and geographic data relates to urban service provision; methods for measuring time and distance; and the tools designers use to tell stories with maps.
Participants will receive a $25 gift card - be sure to register via the provided link!
This enrichment course was developed with the Data + Feminism Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was supported by the Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab.
