What's Happening
- This week your child will be taking the Star Math and Star Reading Test. This is a nationally normed test, and it will give us an idea of how your child is doing compared to his/her peers across the nation. We also use this assessment to see where child is at academically right now. We then will be giving this test throughout the school year to monitor student growth.
- This week and next week, I am introducing your child to the Leader In Me 7 habits.
Learning Goals
Learning Goals This Week
Every week I will be posting your child's learning goals. This is what your child should be able to do by the end of the week. We call them I can statements in class. Hopefully, this should give you some talking points with your child. This week are learning how to use our technology and follow classroom procedures.
This week ask your child about the following:
- I can follow classroom procedures and explain the procedures to my parents.
- I can log into my chrome book and I know how to use Class Link to sign into my Google Drive, Google Classroom, Wonders, Go Math-Think Central, Freckle, IXl, Reflex, etc...
- I can name my classmates.
- I can tell my parents about the STAR Math and Reading test I took.
- I can explain the following Leader in Me habits to my parents:
Habit 1 Be Proactive
Habit 2 Begin with the End in Mind
Habit 3 Put First Things First
- We will learn the other habits next week.
Things To Remember
- It takes teachers, parents, and students a while to get back into a school routine. Be patient and understanding, especially with all of the changes. We will get there! Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns though.
- I value open and honest communication. Remember that I have the same goal as you of helping your child to be successful and have a great school year. Working together is the best way to do that.
- We don't eat lunch until 12:20 each day, so it is important that your child bring a snack and a water bottle to school each day. If possible, use a refillable water bottle with a pop top that does not easily spill.
- "Formal" math will begin on Monday, August 23rd. So, look for math assignments written in your child's agenda. Any math practice pages will be in your child's homework folder. Your child may access Go Math through Class Link using the card he/she was given or using his/her student email and password. Many homework assignments will be completed on the Go Math Personal Math Trainer. You may also access workbook pages there as well. So, if your child forgets his/her workbook pages, you may print them from home.
- "Formal" ELA (English Language Arts-Reading, Writing, Spelling, and Grammar) will begin on Monday, August 23rd. We use the Wonders curriculum by McGraw-Hill.
- Your child will have a spelling and vocabulary test about every six school days. I will post the spelling and vocabulary words in this newsletter each week and I will also send home a hard copy of the spelling/vocabulary words. I will also post the test dates in the Important Dates section of this newsletter. We will have a reading test every 6 days as well, but this is not something your child can study for. The vocabulary test will count as a reading grade, and the spelling test will count as a writing grade.
- We learn a lot of new grammar skills in 4th grade. We also will be doing a lot of writing. We will use the Writing Process, and the 7 Plus 1 Traits of Good Writing. We will also get really good at editing and revising our writing.
- We alternate back and forth between science and social studies. We will teach social studies for a couple of weeks and then switch to science for a couple of weeks. Please look in the Learning Goals section to find out what we are studying each week.
- My classroom is built on respect. Please watch the RESPECT video I show my class each year. I love to incorporate music whenever I can into our learning.
Leader In Me
Although children must be knowledgeable when they graduate, they must also be healthy, engaged, responsible, and caring people.
Leader in Me is about empowering your child to reach their full potential while ultimately finding their voice.
As a school, the staff in this building have made five core commitments to your child. We call these our Core Paradigms. In these paradigms you will find the belief and way we view all students. At this school we see that: • Everyone is a leader. • Everyone has genius. • Change starts with me. • We empower students to lead their own learning. • Educators and families partner to develop the whole person.
Not only do these paradigms apply to your student, they apply to all of us!
Here at MacArthur we believe there is a leader in ALL OF US! We use the Leader in Me curriculum to teach students to be proactive, put first things first, and find areas of strength and leadership. Each morning we will have LEAD time where we learn about what it takes to be a good leader, but we will also address social/emotional concerns, especially dealing with Covid 19 and social distancing.
