Taking a College Day?
What I learned at my Financial Aid National Training for Counselors and Mentors last week at UCA. . .
- The Federal Pell Grant is only available to low-income undergraduate students, not graduate.
- It is advised that students apply early for the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant Program, which provides need-based grants to low-income undergraduate students (campus-based aid). Money runs out!
- The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant Program (TEACH) provides assistance to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students in low-income families. There is an "Agreement to Serve" once the grant is given. Failure to fulfill the contract will result in the grant changing to an unsubsidized loan. Always read the fine print!
- The Federal Perkins Loan is phasing out this year.
- Since the FAFSA application opened early this year (October 1st), they advise parents and students to check college financial aid deadlines as some have moved their deadlines up.
- Colleges will not be able to see the names of other colleges that a student includes on the FAFSA.
- The FAFSA Central Processing System (CPS) notifies the student by email with a link to the student's electronic Student Aid Report (SAR) if the student's email was provided.
When you hear about the Arkansas Academic Challenge, you are told that students must make at least a 19 composite score on the ACT. But, will ADHE accept other college entrance exam scores? Yes! Below are the minimum scores needed to qualify for the Arkansas Academic Challenge:
- SAT--730
- Compass--64
- Accuplacer--79 (Sentencing Skills, Elem. Algebra, Reading)
If you qualify, how much money will you receive? If you continue to meet the renewal requirements each year in college, you can expect the following Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship Award amounts:
4 year institutions:
- $1,000 freshman
- $4,000 sophomore
- $4,000 junior
- $5,000 senior
2 year institution:
- $1,000 first year
- $3,000 second year
If you have specific questions about state and federal aid, please contact or visit the Financial Aid Office at the college your child plans to attend. They have a lot of information and can answer all of your questions.
