FROM THE DESK OF MS. MCDONALD, ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
Wow! What a wonderful first week of Distance Learning we had! Thank you SUPER scholars, families, and staff for being flexible and working so hard! It was so good to see your faces “virtually” and we can’t wait to do it again next week! Keep up that excellent work, Comets!
As a reminder, students need to be logged in to Google Classroom by 8:30 a.m. each morning. Once in Google Classroom, you’re ready to go for the day! Please be sure to let us know how we can help as you adjust to balancing home, work, and school.
If you experienced any trouble with your Chromebook or internet connection, try the following helpful tips to make next week smoother:
1. Turn the computer off and restart it.
2. Ask your teacher to reset your password.
3. Call the FCPS Help Desk for Technical Problems at 859-381-4410.

Cultural Tips for ELL Families
Children can start school as early as three years old. If you do not make much money, your preschool aged child will likely qualify for a program called “Head Start.” This program helps your child have a better chance for success by providing him or her with early education, nutrition and health services, and encouraging you to be involved in their education. Head Start is free if your family qualifies.
If you do not speak English, you have a right to ask for an interpreter to help you communicate with your child’s teacher.
Our school has teachers and programs to help your children learn English.
Our school has a Family Resource Center (FRC). FRC helps families connect with resources in the community. These resources may include food, clothing, and school supplies.
Your child must log in to school every weekday, not miss days unless they are sick, and log in on time.
It is considered rude to be late. Americans expect everyone to be on time.
Teachers encourage children to speak confidently in class when it is their turn.
It is a sign of respect to make eye contact when you are speaking with someone, even if they are your elder. However, staring is considered rude. Your child should look at the screen during lessons.
Parents meet with teachers to discuss a child’s progress, ask questions, and learn what is expected of the child during a time called “Parent Teacher Conferences.” You are also encouraged to make other appointments with the teacher or principal if you have questions or concerns.
Children can start school as early as three years old.
STEM
Many of the things we use for STEM exploration and experiments are household items that you can recycle or reuse! Be creative with materials you already have or are found right outside! Think twice before throwing away something that may be useful for STEM learning at home.

Coventry Oak Elementary PTA
Welcome back to another great school year! This year may look a little different but the goal of the COE PTA remains the same; we want to work together to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.
You can support COE through the Kroger Community Rewards program. Sign in at https://www.kroger.com and register your Kroger plus card. Under your personal account information, you can “click” Kroger Community Rewards and enroll to support Coventry Oak Elementary PTA ID # KS647. Once you enroll, the school will start getting a percentage of what you spend!
Another easy way to support COE is through the BoxTops for Education program. It’s even better than before, no more clipping and sending in boxtops, you simply use the BoxTops app and take a picture of your receipt!
Do you want to show your school spirit? Coventry Oak has an online shop where you can join the PTA and purchase spirit gear. Simply go to https://coventryoak.new.memberhub.store/store and shop from the safety and convenience of your own home. We will have local pick up dates & times at the school.
We will be having our first virtual PTA meeting Thursday, September 3rd at 6:30 PM via zoom. All parents, caregivers, and staff are invited to come and learn how we can support our super scholars during Distance Learning. During this meeting, you will have the opportunity to vote on the 2020-21 Budget. The COE PTA is also seeking officers for the position of secretary, treasurer and several chair positions, nominations will be taken and voted on during this meeting.
Your COE PTA board looks forward to serving you this year. Stay connected through our Facebook page and please join the PTA! You can email us directly at coventryoakptasecretary@gmail.com!
