8th Grade Newsletter

Algebra

Whew! This has been a busy year -- we have finished new content, and are moving into SOL review mode and playing catch up. Students will be reviewing in their classes, along with using class time to get caught up on assignments they have not finished. I know this will disappoint students, but there will not be a Unit 9 Test. With SOL testing happening, there isn’t time to fit it in. If any students have questions about any of the topics learned this year, they can email either Ms. Gensemer or Ms. Comeau for help.

Reminders:

Make sure students are working in ALEKS at home, either 15 minutes four times a week or three 20-minute sessions weekly.
Students need to make sure they are looking at and following due dates listed in Canvas -- these dates are listed with the assignment in the module, along with the number of points for the work.

Álgebra: ¡Vaya! Este ha sido un año ajetreado: hemos terminado el contenido nuevo y estamos pasando al modo de revisión SOL para ponernos al día. Los estudiantes repasarán en sus clases, además de usar el tiempo de clase para ponerse al día con las tareas que no han terminado. Sé que esto decepcionará a los estudiantes, pero no habrá una prueba de la Unidad 9. Con los SOL en curso, no hay tiempo para la misma. Si algún estudiante tiene preguntas sobre cualquiera de los temas aprendidos este año, puede enviar un correo electrónico a la Sra. Gensemer o la Sra. Comeau para pedir ayuda.

Math 8

During the month of June, we will focus on reviewing the skills we learned over the course of the year in preparation for the Math SOL on June 8th (for hybrid students) and June 9th (for distance students). After the SOL we will spend the remainder of the year working on projects that reinforce how 8th grade math topics are applied in the real world and prepare our students for their journey into High School.

Matemáticas 8: Durante el mes de junio nos centraremos en repasar las habilidades que aprendimos durante el transcurso del año en preparación para el SOL el 8 de junio (para estudiantes híbridos) y el 9 de junio (para estudiantes a distancia). Pasaremos el resto del año trabajando en proyectos que refuercen cómo se aplican los temas de matemáticas de octavo grado en el mundo real y preparando a nuestros estudiantes para su transición a la escuela secundaria.

English 8

It’s hard to believe that it’s almost time to say goodbye. Even though it’s been a really strange year with the pandemic causing huge changes to school, we are so proud of how much growth we’ve seen with our 8th grade students. We are ending our English 8 year with a focus on choice reading, a virtual author visit, and a few different writing pieces. In one of these, students will be asked to write a letter to themselves which will be given back to them their senior year at John Handley High School.

Inglés 8: Es difícil creer que es casi la hora de decir adiós. A pesar de que ha sido un año realmente extraño con la pandemia causando grandes cambios en la escuela, estamos muy orgullosos de cuánto crecimiento hemos visto con nuestros estudiantes de octavo grado. Estamos terminando el curso con un enfoque en la lectura de elección, una visita virtual del autor y algunas piezas de escritura diferentes. En uno de estos puntos, se les pedirá a los estudiantes que se escriban una carta a sí mismos que se les devolverá el último año en John Handley High School.

Civics and Economics

As we wrap up the school year, Civics & Economics classes will continue our SOL review. After school or lunch help is always available, have your son and/or daughter check-in with their teacher if they need extra help. Study materials and classwork are also available on Canvas. Please email your son and/or daughter's Civics teacher with any questions or concerns.

Cívica y Economía: Mientras terminamos el año escolar, las clases de Educación Cívica y Economía continuarán con la revisión de SOL. Siempre hay ayuda disponible después de clase o durante el almuerzo; haga que su hijo o hija se registre con su maestro si necesitan ayuda adicional. Los materiales de estudio y el trabajo de clase también están disponibles en Canvas. Envíe un correo electrónico al maestro con cualquier pregunta o inquietud.

Earth Science

Earth Science had the perfect timing with gorgeous weather to end our weather unit. Students completed a weather journal comparing the weather they researched (on a website or app) compared to how they experienced it when they went outside. All other time has been devoted to reviewing and preparing for the SOL. Once the SOL is complete we will take a sneak peak into the world of Biology, since that will be their next science adventure.

Ciencias de la Tierra: Ciencias de la Tierra tuvo el momento perfecto con un clima magnífico para finalizar nuestra unidad de clima. Los estudiantes completaron un diario del clima comparando el clima que investigaron (en un sitio web o aplicación) con lo que experimentaron cuando salieron. El resto del tiempo se ha dedicado a revisar y preparar para el SOL. Una vez que el SOL esté completo, echaremos un vistazo al mundo de la Biología, ya que esa será su próxima aventura científica.

Principles of Science

During our last month of school, students in Principals of Science will continue to use their scientific skills to uncover our world. Students will have a variety of opportunities to showcase their talents through Project Based Learning. It hasn't been a typical school year however, the Principles of Science students have outweighed all expectations. Good luck at Handley, Go Judges!
