Bonsall West Weekly update Dream Big and ride with pride!
Principal Message
Hello Bonsall West families! Parents please make sure to give your child's teacher 10 day notice for an independent study contract when you are taking a planned vacation or trip. When your child is out for a day or two, they can make up the work when they return.
This week the Oceanside Public Library brought the huge bookmobile bus to campus. Students had the opportunity to tour the bus as well as participate in various STEM related activities. These included drawing with 3D glasses, testing our virtual reality headsets, coloring with a 3D app using iPads and drawing a 3D optical illusion. Thank you to all the PTA and STREAM volunteers that helped set it up as well as run it.

Updated Mask Mandate at BWE:
As most of you have heard, March 11th is the end of the mask mandate. That means that beginning March 14th masks will be optional at BWE. It is going to be so nice to see everyone's faces! In addition when the school hosts activities that are open to our parents, such as awards assembly, presentations etc. , in these instances parents will no longer be required to mask, show vaccine card or show a negative test.
Parent Volunteers
Parent volunteers are once again allowed on campus. The rules are a bit different for this. Parents must first fill out the volunteer packet located on the district website. In this instance parents must show proof of vaccine or negative test taken within 48 hours of working in our classrooms.
Academics/Character
This month, we will be learning about Habit 6: Synergize! When we synergize, we work together to accomplish a shared goal. Together is better!
Social-Emotional Learning and Health
March is all about teamwork and learning from/working with others rather than trying to take everything on ourselves. Asking for help and being open to the ideas of others can help with alleviating stress and anxiety, inspiring confidence and creating a greater idea.
What Research Tells Us about SEL and Student Success
Social-emotional learning is an important part of a well-rounded education. Research shows that SEL is an important lever for boosting academic achievement, including 11% gains in academics. Positive social-emotional skills are also correlated with improved attendance, reduced disciplinary incidents, and an 11:1 return on investment for SEL programs.
To learn more about the relationship between SEL and improved academic outcomes, please explore this research on the connections between social-emotional learning and the traditional metrics of student success, including attendance, behavior, and course performance.
Please consider making a clothing donation to our health office of shorts/pants/shirts and undergarments for students who have clothing accidents during the school day. Thank you!
Please make sure to encourage your students to be responsible to bring their school items( agendas, masks, backpacks, lunches, snacks, water bottles) daily. This fosters the development of responsibility and gives the students a great sense of accomplishment. Please remember to have your child arrive on time. When students arrive late, they miss the critical components of the daily schedule/agenda as well as instruction. Thank you!
Reminder, school begins every day promptly at 8:00 a.m. daily. If students are not with their teacher by 8:00 a.m., they are considered late. Every Thursday is an early release day. Our TK students get out at 11:20, Kindergarten is out at 12:50 and our 1-6th graders are out at 1:00 p.m.
Thursdays are college shirt days. If your child has a college t-shirt, please have them wear it.
Fridays are Bonsall West shirt days. If your child has a Bonsall West shirt, please have them show their school spirt.
Don't forget we have several reverse osmosis water stations for refilling water bottles. Please send in refillable bottles for your child to stay hydrated.
Thank you!
Academics/Character
Character
The habit for the month of March is Habit 6: "Synergize!"
This habit is important for helping us achieve more with the power of others. You can practice at home by trying to finish a large puzzle, lego set or even coming up with something new for dinner. When we work together, we can come up with new ideas or do things that we may have a hard time with alone.
"Awesome is what happens when we put "we" before "me"!" ~Unknown
Meet Staff Members
This week's meet the staff member is : Marcel Reed. Marcel's position at BWE is a para professional for our special education department. He began working here in August. Marcel enjoys playing soccer, basketball and skating. He also enjoys playing the guitar, inline skating and cooking. Marcel believes the "lockdown" had a great effect on people's mental health. He wanted to work with kids in order to be part of their growth and have a positive influence on their lives. He certainly is achieving that goal on our campus! Thank you Marcel.

COVID Updates
COVID-19 Update
As we continue to get inquiries about some of the following topics, we wanted to keep you updated with the latest information. As previously stated the mask mandate will end on March 11th. Students and teachers will have the option to wear a mask or not, after that date.
Keeping Our Kids in school- BUSD
Our priority continues to be keeping our students in school and safe. With that in mind, we continue to work closely with county health experts to accomplish this goal.
At Home COVID-19 Test kits are available upon request for all BUSD students. All test kits results must be registered. Please email Bonsall West, or the District Office to get your at-home test kits. BUSD has 1 test kit per student available.
Case Reporting and Notification:
We will continue to do our best in notifying known close contacts and updating case notifications on the BUSD Covid Dashboard on a regular basis. The dashboard will now include self-reported test results in addition to results from clinics and labs. We appreciate our families adhering to the guidelines, closely monitoring for symptoms, and keeping sick children home.
If you have any questions regarding Covid 19 and the county department of public health
( CDPH) guidelines for the decision tree, please contact Mrs. Cecilia Rocha, our health tech @ cecilia.rocha@bonsallusd.com
