Room 35 Class Family Newsletter

Growing as writers, readers, mathematicians, and scientist
Writers:
We are coming to the end of our nonfiction book writing. We will work hard has writers this week to wrap up our writing, revise, and edit to make it make the most sense for our reader. Next week we will begin publishing them. Some students may have to finish some writing for homework so they will be ready for publishing. How you can help at home:
Encourage your child to share their writing with you. Be the reader of their book. Encourage them but also give any tips to help make it even better. You could use the language " I love how you...As a reader it would really help me if you..."
Readers:
We are also wrapping up our study of Nonfiction texts. We have learned so much about how readers read to learn and figure out new unknown words. Our next study will be understanding characters in books.
How you can help at home:
Encourage your student to read a good balance of fiction and nonfiction. We are working hard to finish books before we star new ones. However, if you notice your reader reading a lot of fiction at home encourage them to bring a nonfiction book home to read for a few days. We want to develop balanced readers.
Scientist:
We are also wrapping up our study of Earth Materials. We will Test this Friday, January 26th. A study guide will come home tomorrow and should be completed by Friday. Students may use their unit of study notebooks to help them answer the questions.
How you can help at home:
Help your students review all the information they have learned over the last several weeks as geologist. Also encourage them to begin noticing these things in the world around them.
Mathematicians:
We are wrapping our study of multiplication. A study guide is coming home tonight. We will test Wednesday, January 24th.
How you can help at home:
We have learned so many strategies to help us solve multiplication problems, but we know mathematicians use efficient strategies. It is so important that your student begin to practice the multiplication facts. You can make flash cards out of index cards or buy them from the dollar store. It only takes a few minutes a couple of days a week to develop fluency. I would suggest having a set in your car or maybe in a purse where your student could practice a few minutes on the way to dinner or waiting at the doctors office.

Great Kindness Challenge
Our school will be competing in a kindness challenge starting this Thursday. A paper with more information about the challenge will come home then. Students who complete 15 of 25 of the challenges on the sheet will be recognized on our wall of hearts as well as at our next Unbeleafable celebration.
Please help us make our school and world a little kinder.
