Sixth Grade Band Bulletin
September
Great Start to the Year!
I look forward to meeting you at the 6th Grade Curriculum Night (September 8th--6:30pm)
Lessons are now underway!
Each student will receive four official lessons (starting Monday). The GLE's (each GLE Unit has a total of 8 songs) are due at the end of each Unit Due Date. The first unit due date is October 3rd.
STUDENTS SHOULD NOT PROCRASTINATE! DUE DATES ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR! Just a reminder from the syllabus, GLE Units are worth 50 points. Each song a student is short of the unit goal is minus 4 points. 90%+ of students' grades is based solely on assessment per district policy. Small quizzes and GLE units are primary source of the students' grades.
I will have help sessions for students to come in before/after school to get songs passed off. These can be for students who want to get ahead and students who are falling behind. I'll have a sign-up list posted in room 016 for students to sign-up. Because of my meeting schedule, the help session days-of-the-week will change to work around my schedule.
AGAIN: STUDENTS CANNOT PROCRASTINATE!
What Does a Passed off Song Look Like?
If your child is anything like I was back in gulp... 1986, he/she probably feels that as soon as the rhythms/notes are really close--the song will get passed off. Our standards are quite a bit higher. In order to pass off a song, this is what the teachers expect (at all grade levels)
*perfect/near perfect accuracy on notes and rhythms
*characteristic tone (sound) (accurate grip-percussion)
*Accurate tonguing (brass/woodwinds)--accurate stickings (percussion)
*Performing the dynamics listed
*Correct posture/horn angle)
When your child is practicing a song, he/she should practice until all of those areas mentioned above have been mastered. It may take 1 or 2 days to perfect a song at home. That's expected. What's important is that students come to lessons prepared to play at least 2 songs so that they can keep up with the due dates.

Online Practice Journal Due Monday
Future Online Practice Journals will be due the first school day of the week (usually Monday). Each practice journal is worth 5 points. In order to get full credit, the practice journal must be submitted on time and have complete sentences.
Thanks for reading!
Enjoy the Weekend!
