- Face painting is allowed if the student is recognizable and the painting applies to the costume being worn (i.e. whiskers for a cat, nose for a clown).
- No toy (or real) weapons are allowed at school.
- If a costume is determined by a staff member to be a disruption in the classroom, a possible safety hazard, or inappropriate the student will be asked to change.
- Students may be allowed time to change into their costume at the discretion of the teacher.
- Parents are encouraged to supervise their child's costume choice – keeping in mind that ultimately Turrill Elementary is a place of learning, safety and appropriateness.
- If students do wear inappropriate costumes, the administration reserves the right to ask them to change.

Literacy Center News and the Read at Home Plan
We've had a great start to using our new Literacy Center. Now that our Grand Openings are completed, we have a system to allow students to take books home.
Letters for parents with an introduction to the Read at Home plan, a reading log with a place for a signature, and reading tips for parents will be placed in your mailboxes tomorrow October 13. If your class is ready to take home books next week during your scheduled Literacy Center time, please send the note home in the bag we are providing with 1 leveled book and 1 library book. (Levels N and above are still across the hall, but the goal is to move those over to the library to make it more convenient soon.) As we build our leveled book collection, we hope to increase the number of leveled books that go home. Each child K-5 will get a black drawstring backpack during their scheduled Literacy center block next week to bring their leveled book and library book back and forth.
If you already have a reading log that you are using or would like to use, you can continue to do so. The only district requirements are that it has a place for a parent signature, 20 minutes of reading a night, and reading tips. You can always copy the reading tips from the log provided and put them onto your own log if you choose to.
To check out books, we will train the volunteers to take pictures of each child with the 2 books they are taking home as they line up to leave. Each teacher will have a folder on an iPad to store the pictures, and as a child returns the books to the Literacy Center, the volunteer will delete the picture and take a new one. If the child does not bring their books back, they will not take any new books home. There can be some exceptions, since we don’t want children to go too long without books to read at home.
New questions and hiccups will come up along the way. This is a work in progress, but we appreciate your patience and support in implementing Turrill’s Reading at Home plan. Please see Beth or Liz with any questions or concerns about running this smoothly.
Parent Teacher Conference Attendance
