Math is fun!!! Welcome to Mrs. Molenaar our Math resource specialist!
Mr. Molenaar is our Numeracy resource teacher at Westview Elementary. The focus of her work is to support the teaching and learning of math concepts for students and teachers throughout the school. Mrs. Molenaar is a huge support for us as we work towards our goal of improving student achievement in numeracy.
Looking at our data, we noticed that our math results needed some support. As a result, we started looking for strategies to help our students build confidence and skills in the area of mathematics.
Our goal with our math interventions is to find the best way to help students succeed in math.
Here are some common Math Interventions that we might use:
Children struggling in math benefit from a combination of the following interventions:
- Increasing the length of time spent on a topic
- Focus on conceptual understanding and skill mastery
- Avoiding shortcuts and tricks until a child understands the concepts
- Helping children link concrete concepts with abstract processes using manipulatives, demonstrations, and explanations
- Acknowledging that making mistakes is a part of the learning process and providing a safe atmosphere for making mistakes
- Encouraging and welcoming questions and curiosity from our students
- Giving children opportunities to practice skills correctly in a focused manner several times per week
- Working on the foundation skills in math
- Providing immediate feedback
- Having FUN IN MATH!!!
PAC upate
Thank you so much to our entire parent community for your constant and ongoing support, open communication and advocacy for our kiddos! Parents are integral to a child’s learning! We are so grateful for all you do!
Our cookie dough fundraiser was another great success, and orders will be ready for pick up December 7th from 2:30 - 4:30 in the foyer of the school. As the dough is frozen, we need your help in picking it up when it is ready to distribute as we do not have the freezer space to keep it for a long period of time!
The last day of school December 17th, we will be having pancake and pajama day. We will need parent volunteers to help make and serve the pancakes, then tidy up after. It is a busy morning, and an early start (around 7:00 am!) but one that the students and staff look forward to! We put on the music, start the coffee pot and get stirring. It is a day filled with joy and fun! Please let the PAC executive know if you are able to volunteer on this day by emailing wepac2012@gmail.com.
Congratulations to Ms. Traer’s class for being the winners of our cookie dough fundraiser! A swim day is on PAC in January!
Breakfast program continues!
Thank you so much for everyone for helping to get our breakfast program off and running! Breakfast Program is a program that well accessed by our student population. The last full year (pre - Covid), we recorded 3000 kids served throughout the year. This is a much needed program in our school! Every child is welcomed to e sit down, and enjoy fruit smoothies, toast, cereal, apple sauce, yogurt, muffins, granola bars, fresh fruits, etc.
Huge thanks go out to our local firefighters for funding this amazing program! We are still in need of a few more volunteers to help run this amazing program! Already we are noticing changes in some of our children's ability to self regulate after they have a had a good breakfast!
Once again, thank you to our amazing volunteers who are making this happen!
Communicating Student Learning
Assessment and curriculum are interconnected. Curriculum sets the learning standards that give focus to classroom instruction and assessment. Assessment involves the wide variety of methods or tools that educators use to identify student learning needs, measure competency acquisition, and evaluate students' progress toward meeting provincial learning standards.
Effective communication between home and school is central to student success. Our assessments and reports are designed to:
communicate student learning and progress in ways that are meaningful, varied, and responsive
encourage open dialogue between the student, home, and school
focus on conceptual learning (know-do-understand), with an emphasis on competencies
promote student ownership of learning
rely on authentic evidence of learning
The goal of all updates is to communicate student progress and growth in relation to the learning standards and meaningfully engage students and parents/guardians in the learning process.
Parents/guardians will receive communication about their child's learning a minimum of five times during a school year, and the first formal report is coming out this Friday!
Please connect with your child’s teacher if you have any questions!
Social and emotional Learning (SEL)
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is how children learn to understand and manage their emotions, set goals, show empathy for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. These skills are based on five strategies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
Research shows that SEL makes a difference in your child’s success in school, work, and life. Children who have strong SEL competence are 50% more likely to graduate from high school and have a full-time job by the age of 25. They are also twice as likely to earn a college degree. Research also suggests that children with strong SEL skills have more friends, feel connected to school, and want to do well. Through participating in SEL, students learn the skills to succeed in every facet in school and the rest of their lives.
Teachers are an important resource in helping children develop social and emotional learning. This year, as we respond to the needs of our students, one of our staff members Ms. Hoekstra, has taken on the role as SEL teacher for a small group of students in the Upper Intermediate grades. The work she does will focus on helping students:
- Develop positive relationships
- Resist inappropriate social pressure
- Understand social expectations and manners during different situations
- Participate in social groups
- Maintain academic performance during frustrations
- Self-regulation techniques to control emotions
Social and emotional learning are critical skills needed to help your child thrive in both the classroom and in life. Please do not hesitate to connect to if you are looking for more tips and in sharing ideas on how you can promote stronger social emotional learning skills in your child.
Here is a great resource for your perusal!

Westview Elementary Christmas Concert Dec. 15th
We are very pleased to let you know that our Board of Education has made the decision to move into the next phase of school opening. This phase includes welcoming parents and volunteers into the school. All covid protocols still apply.
