Self-Management Classroom Guidance
PreK-1st Grade
Self-Management Goal
Students will understand the concept of self-management and why it is important both socially and academically.
Building Background
Self-Management is the ability to manage one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations. Let’s think about a time when we were really upset or disappointed. How were you able to calm yourself down in that situation?
Mindful Moment
Take 10 deep breaths, while paying attention to the rise and fall of your chest as you breathe.
Watch No David!
Questions before Watching
Show the front cover of the book and ask the following questions:
- Can we tell what this little boy is doing?
- What is about to happen?
- Has this ever happened in your home?
- How would your mother feel if something like this happened in your home?
Questions after Watching
- Have you ever had experiences like David?
- Has a parent ever told you “NO?”
- Tell me about a young child who did something that was going to hurt them. Did an adult or older person yell “NO” to try and protect the young child?
- The last few pages in the book show David in “time out.” Look closely and you can see a tear coming down his cheek. How do you think David was feeling?
- How did David’s mother feel when she saw David’s sad face?
Activity
Emotion Act Out
Acting out emotions and engaging students in role-playing can promote kindness and empathy. Let student's creativity flow while encouraging them to explore feelings and empathy through dramatic expression.
