Making Memories

What we will be learning in October

In ELA, during the month of October, we will finish our illustration unit and begin our small moment stories. We will also be focusing on higher level thinking skills while reading, like making connections, making inferences, and visualizing what's happening in the story. We will continue to have weekly spelling tests. Below is the week and unit that we will be studying. Also listed is the word of the week that we will be focusing on in class.

Oct. 6th: Short u; carve

Oct. 13th: Long a/silent e; consider

Oct 20th: Long i/silent e; core

Oct. 27th: Long o/silent e; damp

In Math, students will be working on representing and comparing numbers up to 1200. In addition, they will begin working on using the attributes to analyze two and three dimensional figures. In Science, students will be studying different kinds of energy (like light, heat, and sound energy). Students will also begin a unit on force and motion. Students will be working on Government and Community services and geography in Social Studies.

Parent Conferences

Parent teacher conferences will be taking place on October 13th (although many of you are scheduled before that day). Please remember your scheduled conference time. If you cannot make it to your conference, let your child's homeroom teacher know as soon as possible so that alternative plans can be arranged.

Book Character Day

Every year, 2nd grade chooses to have a team book character. We choose a book that all of the children enjoy and then the whole grade level dresses up as a character from that book. This year, we are going to do Where's Waldo? We need for your child to bring a plain red shirt so that we can add white stripes like Waldo. The shirt does not have to be new, it can be stained, or worn inside out. T-shirts are due October 17th. If you would like to donate wide masking tape, please contact your child's teacher.

We're goin' on a field trip!

So the 2nd grade teachers have decided on a field trip that would be both educational and fun for our students. We will be going to the Mayborn Children's Museum in Waco on November 18th. In order to help pay for buses and admission fees, we are asking for each parent to send $5 by November 5th. If you would be interested in helping chaperone, please contact your child's teacher and fill out volunteer paperwork in the front office.

Check your child's lunch balance

Don't forget to check your child's lunch account. You can access your child's lunch account and add money online by visiting this website. https://paypams.com/HomePage.aspx
