Newsletter - January 2022
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! That has had many meanings for me over the years. This year I’m very happy to put 2021 in my rearview mirror and move forward with a renewed “hope” on so many different levels.
As we move forward into 2022 we strive for new beginnings. We must continue to hope for the “sun to rise after the storm” and I believe we are closer than ever in seeing and feeling that sunshine. As a school community we have been on an endless treadmill of adjustments and pivots in order to meet our communities needs on all levels. And at the same time we needed to take care of ourselves, our loved ones and one another so we could continue to navigate through what it seemed like an insurmountable storm.
Each year for the past several years I choose “My One Word” for the coming year to use as a guidepost throughout the year to keep my thinking on how we can continue to evolve as a school community to meet the needs of our students today and more importantly their preparation for tomorrow's world that we will be living in. As we enter 2022 with hope and renewed energy - I will focus on “Gratitude”. We can all see so much to be grateful for when we take the time to look each and every day.
Let's all use the lens of gratitude as we move forward each day and see the wonderful rainbows after the clouds move away.
Best wishes are extended for a year full of joy, good health and success.
Be well.
Bill Chaplin, SHRHS Principal

Senior Transition Class ~ Guest Speakers
Newsletter January 2022
Submitted by: Mr Burke
As the semester winds down I’d like to take the opportunity to thank a number of people who took the time to come to speak to our Senior Transition class as they prepare for life after high school.
Alex Navarro, Asst Director of Student Success, Nichols College
Ms. Navaro talked about the college application process and the FAFSA, as well as answering questions about Nichols programs and college life in general. She was very knowledgeable and cleared up many questions and concerns of our seniors.
Abby Karalus '19 - Nichols College Student
Bailey Bowes '19 - Worcester State Student
We were very excited to have some of our own recent graduates speak about their experiences in college. Abby is a junior at Nichols college and spoke about college life from a residence life. She is an RA, orientation leader, and athlete - so very involved in campus life. Bailey is a junior at Worcester State University. As a commuter he talked about campus life from that perspective, and the importance of getting involved in clubs and campus activities as well as ways the school encourages the involvement of commuters in campus life.
Both Abby and Bailey also talked about college in general - from making friends to classes to the hassles of parking.
Sgt Daniel Hegarty, Army National Guard
SSG Anthony Labaire, Army National Guard
Sgt Nicholas Lamothe, Marines
SFC Jennifer Walker, Army
SSG Caren Pavlik, Army
TSgt Ryan Morrisette, Air Force
SSgt Casey Belia, Air Force Reserve
SMSgt Lawrence, Air Force Reserve
EA1 David Davis, Navy
The above members of our armed forces took part in a panel discussion educating our seniors about their option to enter the military after high school. Each described his/her own branch of the military, its purpose, and benefits. Collectively they explained that entering the military is an excellent option for some high school graduates - highlighting duty and honor, discipline and physical fitness, life experience, job training, money for college, travel, and a possible career as some of the benefits of military life.
Thank you to all of our speakers for their time, efforts, and their interest in the well-being and futures of our seniors.

Dudley Fire & Emergency Services
January School Newsletter
Paul Konieczny
Carbon Monoxide is an odorless and tasteless gas that is produced when burning a fossil fuel such as fuel oil in home heating systems, gasoline in your car or wood pellets for heating.
Home heating systems are working long and hard during the winter months here in New England and in cold weather we may start our car and allow it to run for a short time in order to warm it up before we drive to work or school. For the most part our home heating plant and vehicles operate without problems however on occasion they do fail and may produce harmful levels of carbon monoxide.
The only way to know if a carbon monoxide emergency takes place in your home is to have at least 1 carbon monoxide detector on each level of your home and within 10ft of each bedroom. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds evacuate your home immediately and call 911 from outside. Fire fighters will meter your home to find at what levels the carbon monoxide is and also its source in order to eliminate the emergency.
Safety Tips!
~ Annual maintenance on heating systems is a must, if not already done, set up an annual maintenance program with your service provider in an effort to prevent a failure.
~ Clean your chimney annually
~ Do not allow your vehicle or electric generator to run in an attached garage
PLTW Biomedical News
The Project Lead The Way Biomedical Science program was chosen by industry professionals to be recognized for their Project Lead The Way work submitted to Mass STEM Hub’s Student Industry Connects for Massachusetts STEM Week. Industry experts, including mechanical, civil and biomedical engineers, biological researchers and computer scientists from Medtronic, Smith & Nephew, Microsoft, BAE Systems, Verizon and more read through student work and provided individualized feedback to the students. . All biomedical students in Principles of Biomedical Science, Human Body Systems, Medical Interventions and Biomedical Innovations submitted work from labs and presentations like Blood Spatter, Biometrics, Ear Models and Designing an Emergency Room.

Academics Lead The Way
The Fall sports teams are excellent examples of the term student-athletes and the District’s mission to put students first. These STUDENT-athletes truly made it happen in the classroom in the second quarter. The following teams have achieved academic excellence and are recognized as:
Gold Level Academic Excellence Awards
3.00-4.00 GPA for the first quarter
Silver Level Academic Excellence Awards
2.50-2.99 GPA for the first quarter
The combined Athletic Department GPA for Term 1 of the 2021-2022 academic year is 3.247, averaged across 12 teams. Congratulations to all of the student-athletes and coaches on a job WELL DONE!
2021-22 MIAA Student Ambassadors
SH Athletics is both proud and excited to announce the promotion of senior Austin Giarnese and selection of junior Grace Bateman as Student Ambassadors to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA). This is both an honor and a privilege, with Grace receiving numerous recommendations from the coaching staff to support her position as a reliable student-athlete leader and representative of the SH Athletic Department, and Austin continuing in his role as Senior Student Ambassador, where he will most certainly represent our program with character, class, integrity, and maturity. We look forward to the ideas and leadership these two students bring back to continue elevating our program!
SH Athletics - Fall Recap & Winter Preview
After a summer that felt almost as if we were free of the pandemic, we returned to our new “normal” of COVID-era changes and modifications in Fall 2021. Despite these challenges, our student-athletes overcame the obstacles of this uncomfortable reality and competed at a high level within their leagues and region. The SH Athletic Department saw well over 250 prospective student-athletes register for 14 teams competing this Fall (Unified basketball, boys/girls cross country, boys/girls soccer, field hockey, football, volleyball, cheer, and golf). Over the course of the season, close to 175 contests were played, and over 300+ practices held… we saw statewide team sportsmanship award winners in field hockey, Mid Wach B League Champions in boys soccer, 25 league athletic and academic all-stars across all sports, and 3 T&G Super Team all-stars. It is with tremendous pride that we can say SH Athletics not only faced their challenges with strength and determination, but they truly represented what it meant to wear the maroon and gold. Thank you to all those who helped facilitate this season, whether from the field or from home… we appreciate you.
As we continue to facilitate a complete transition indoors, with renewed pandemic persistence and subsequent modifications, much work remains to be done for the winter season, and no doubt challenges will arise. Our indoor track teams have competed regularly in league and statewide meets each week, with many of our student-athletes setting personal bests. Cheer continues to fine tune their competition skills in the winter season, while supporting our winter teams at games. Wrestling has seen an increase in participation and strong competition within the league and at regional tournaments each week. Both boys and girls basketball teams have had a fiery start to the season, each going 4-1 out of the gate. While we are sure to continue facing challenges from the ongoing pandemic, I am confident that together we will succeed at preserving the integrity and longevity of this season, to the benefit of our student-athletes.
Fall 2021 Senior Nights
Many thanks to the Class of 2022 Seniors for their contributions and leadership to their teams over the past several years. While we will miss their presence and participation, all of our staff, students, and community supporters look forward to witnessing their achievements in the years to come. A special thanks to the many parents, guardians, and family members who have supported these student-athletes throughout their careers!

GSA Highlights
December represented many “Happy Days for GSA!”
On December 15, members of Shepherd Hill’s Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) traveled to Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School for the second central region Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education GSA Leadership Conference of the 2021-2022 school year. Students spent over three hours discussing self and community care with like-minded peers from area high schools including Westborough, Nashoba, Burncoat, Holliston and Assabet.
We ended the month with a celebration that included a voluntary secret gift swap and lots of laughs. Students came together to write personalized notes and create “Happy Days from GSA” appreciation bags for staff.
As we move into 2022, we are excited for greater self-discovery and growth!
