Poplar Grove Post
December 2016
Note From the Principal:
Parents,
It is hard to believe the Fall semester is quickly coming to an end. Our students have impressed me with their desire to learn and willingness to take on difficult challenges. Fall Fest was a huge success, and we are already making plans for next year. Thank you to all the volunteers and to our fantastic PTO for making Fall Fest a successful event. Our building leadership team, in conjunction with our student council and parent advisors, considered technology upgrades at our last meeting. We had intended to purchase Promethean boards, however, I was notified earlier this week that FSSD will be providing us with three Promethean boards at no cost to PGMS! As a result, we will be able to use the funds from our two fundraisers (Dress Down for Dollars and Fall Fest) to purchase 60 Chromebooks. Words cannot express my gratitude for the support our parents provide. Thank you!
Additionally, our event calendar is full of wonderful events including a strings concert, band concert, and choir concert. Please click here to view all school events for the month of December. Finally, our Beta Club is collecting items for Room in the Inn through December 9. Please refer to the calendar link to view specific items to donate. Please bring items and drop them off in the lobby or outside Mrs. Ayer’s room (405).

Tips for Keeping Your Children Well This Winter
· Regular Hand washing- Teach your kids to wash their hands well and often.
· Ensure that your kids are eating a healthy, balanced diet.
· Exercise
· Sleep- Sleep is essential for a healthy immune system. Your child should get at least 7 hours of restful sleep each night.
Unfortunately, colds and viruses are part of childhood. Research does show that kids who contract more viruses at younger ages tend to have better immune systems when they get older.
CALLING ALL NURSES!
FSSD is in need of substitute nurses. If you are an LPN or RN with a current nursing license for the state of Tennessee and are interested in subbing in the school clinics, please contact Amy Fisher, FSSD Nursing Coordinator, at 615-794-4837 or email at fisheramy@fssd.org. If you are currently a stay-at-home parent, or working part-time, substituting in our school clinics is a great way to keep your license current as it qualifies as part-time work in the nursing field.
Have a wonderful, healthy and safe holiday!

Counselor's Corner:
Raising teenagers can be challenging and frustrating. Sometimes it is easy to lose sight of the fact that teenagers want a positive relationship with their parents. Although they can be moody and frustrating to communicate with, teenagers need to feel loved and accepted. If teenagers don't get their love and acceptance needs met by parents or other positive adults in their lives, they will turn to other, often less positive, influences for these needs. I offer this as a reminder to all parents that teenagers want a loving relationship with their parents even when their words and actions say otherwise.
Needs of Teenagers
1. To feel loved and accepted by their peers.
2. To be understood.
3. To have their feelings validated.
4. To like the way they look.
5. To be good at something.
6. To be loved and be a loving person.
7. To have positive adult models including dad and mom.
8. To feel capable in ability to learn and socialize.
9. To be given reasonable limits in their lives that tie back into their family's
values.

French News
Seventh graders have been studying school vocabulary in French. They have been talking about their classes and what they like and dislike. They drew visual representations of their ideal classrooms. Some items they included were les élèves (students), une porte de Star Wars (Star Wars door), un bureau (desk) and des poissons (fish).
Eighth graders did a great job reciting "Déjeuner de Matin" by Jacque Prevert, a classic French poem. Through this poem, the students are studying the different past tenses. Here are a few of them as they presented.
