English Language Arts (ELA)
The kindergarten ELA program is dividing into different components. Below is a description of each component and what your child will be learning the upcoming week.
Daily Message
This week in Daily Message we will...
- edit the daily message by finding and fixing the errors.
- ass adjectives to describe the noun in the message.
- find sight words we have learned in the message.
Word Work
This week in Word Work we will...
identify /o/ at the beginning and end of words.
segment and blend words with the short o sound.
read, write, and spell the sight word "you."
Shared Reading
This week in Shared Reading we will...
describe the relationship between illustrations and the text
ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
retell familiar stories including key details.
Grammar/Writing
This week in Grammar/Writing we will...
review nouns and verbs.
identify adjectives and use them to describe nouns.
share ideas by drawing, writing, and/or dictating.
begin a sentence with a capital letter.
end a sentence with a period.
draw pictures that match spoken contributions.
Centers
This week in Centers we will...
- rainbow write sight words and identify initial and medial sounds.
- follow directions in order to illustrate and label the job and tools we would like to do when we grow up.
- practice phonics/reading skills on the computer.
- add sight words in order to complete a book.
- work with the teacher on specific skills .
Math
Unit 2: Counting and Comparing
This week in math we will continue to...
- copy and construct repeating patterns.
- determine what comes next in a repeating pattern.
- comparing repeating and nonrepeating patterns.
- Counting, representing, and representing quantities.
- describe repeating patterns.
Computer
We will begin to use our personal user names and passwords for logging into the BCPS One. Please have your child practice at home. I will be attaching each child's user name and password to their gold folder this week.
Below are the steps that you and your child can use.
- Go to www.bcps.org.
- Go to students and click on BCPS One.
- Have your child log into their BCPS One account using their personal user name and password.
- Click on ELA.
- On the left hand side open Wonders.
- Go to the "To Do" section.
- I have placed activities that go with our skills for the week.
Specials
Monday - Art (wear an art smock)
Tuesday - Music
Wednesday - P.E. (wear sneakers)
Thursday - Library (return library books)
Friday - Dance (wear sneakers)
Volunteer Training
Birthday Celebration
We will celebrate monthly birthdays on the last Friday (if possible) of each month. Parents are welcome to celebrate their child's birthday with us. Please make sure that you have completed and returned the volunteer application and training/certificate. There is no food allowed at these celebrations. However, your child may choose to share a book for our class library, a game for indoor or outdoor recess, a small item like a pencil, or a craft to do during the celebration.

- 1/3 - Schools reopen
- 1/4 - PTA (7:00PM Library)
- 1/13 - Schools Closed 3 hours early/12:50 (end of 2nd Quarter)
- 1/16 - Schools Closed (MLK Day)
- 1/17 - Schools Closed (professional development for staff)
