Summer Sports Update
Regina Junior Senior High School
May 21, 2020
Hello Regina Families,
As many of you know, Governor Reynolds released new information on summer sports and activities yesterday. I have also received guidance from the Iowa Department of Education (IDOE), Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU), and Iowa High School Athletic Association (IAHSAA). I would like to share that guidance with you and inform you of our plans. Please keep in mind that this guidance, and therefore our plans, can change based on a variety of situations.
Please read this carefully so we are all aware of the actions being taken by Regina and all of our responsibilities in keeping each other safe. There are some questions (i.e. transportation to games, weight room and hitting facility use) that we are supposed to get answers to soon. Coaches will communicate those ideas to players and parents once we have the answers. I am excited for this positive turn of events, but we can’t let our guards down and get lax in the precautions we have taken over the past couple of months. The IDOE made it clear that if schools are not able to ensure that this guidance is followed by everyone then they should go back to canceling these activities.
Softball and baseball practices may begin on June 1. Softball and baseball games may begin on June 15. This does not include junior high teams. Eighth graders traditionally play on high school teams. That may still continue. The following mitigation efforts are required to help ensure the safety of everyone:
Signage will be posted stating that no one should attend or participate if they currently have symptoms or have been in contact with anyone with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 in the last 14 days.
Dugouts will not be used during practices. Player items should be lined up against a fence at least 6 feet apart. Use of dugouts is permitted during games only.
Parents should remain in their cars when they pick up players from practice.
Players should use their own gloves, helmets, and bats as much as possible.
Coaches are responsible for ensuring social distancing is maintained between players as much as possible.
Players must bring their own water or beverage to consume. No shared drinking devices may be used.
Coaches must sanitize shared equipment before and after each practice and game.
Players and coaches should check their temperatures before attending practices and games. This should be done at home with a parent or guardian.
Anyone with symptoms of illness is not allowed to participate. Fans must not attend if they have symptoms of illness.
No concession stands are allowed.
Fans are encouraged to bring their own chairs or stand. There will be limited space in the bleacher areas.
Fans should practice social distancing between different household units and accept personal responsibility for public health guidelines.
Regina will implement any needed measures to ensure social distancing and increased hygiene practices to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19.
Coaches should be aware of students with pre-existing conditions so they can take additional precautions as needed.
Players should provide their own hand sanitizer.
The spitting of sunflower seed shells (or anything similar) is banned.
Coaches must track absences for the purpose of noting potential COVID-19 cases.
Contact public health if a positive case of COVID-19 is reported.
All other sports will remain suspended until July 1. This includes use of the weight room and open gyms/fields.
Yours in Christ,
Glenn Plummer
