News Bites 2023-2024
Week of November 13 through November 17, 2023
SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER DAY
Each year, during the third week in November, we take the time to recognize and celebrate the members of our board of education for the considerable amount of time, passion, and talent they donate to support the students, families, staff, and community of District 33.
We honor our school board members Chad McLean, Rita Balgeman, Tom Doyle, Felicia Gills, Morgan Banasiak, Sandra Garcia and Janette Hernandez, who serve as unpaid volunteers for the benefit of the students and community by providing a voice and vision for the district.
The role of a Board member is crucial as they determine “WHAT” the priorities are for a district. At the same time, they monitor the administration, which defines “How” it gets done.
Because of their voice and vision, a lot has been accomplished on behalf of their constituents, including numerous capital projects such as:
Stem Labs, new playgrounds, air conditioning, upgraded building facades, and a new space for our early childhood program
Smaller class sizes, an academic enrichment program in the primary grades, expanded clubs and sports, including the first middle school football program
And much more.
The district administrative team thanks the board for their leadership. Embracing the role of a public servant can be very difficult, and they have collectively kept the best interest of our students, staff, and families in mind with every decision they have made. Thank you for ensuring we have the resources to do our jobs and the support to make difficult decisions.

TURNER PRINCIPAL RECEIVES SERVICE AWARD
Mr. Maurice McDavid, principal of Turner School, recently received a service award from his alma mater, Knox College. The Knox Service Award, established in 1987, is given to members of the Knox community in recognition of outstanding volunteer service benefiting Knox College.
Maurice McDavid graduated in 2010, majoring in Educational Studies. Maurice pursued educational administration after Knox and currently serves as principal for Turner Elementary School and assistant pastor at the United Pentecostal Church of DeKalb. In addition, he is the founder of Culture, Identity, and Multilingual Advocacy (CIMA) of Illinois.
He has served Knox in many capacities: K Club Engagement Council Member and fundraiser, Applicant Review Committee for the Head Football Coach Search, panelist for Center for Intercultural Life Black History Month event, speaker-student-athletes as part of the ‘Forever Fire’ career development program, and Prairie Fire football team recruiter. Maurice continues to promote Knox and Knox athletics to prospective students and has worked with athletics staff, coaches, and students about race relations and social justice.

FACILITIES & GROUNDS
While staff and students are on break, the Facilities and Grounds Department will be
working hard to perform routine maintenance that cannot be addressed when buildings are bustling with activity.
Our Custodial Staff will be busy tackling the detailed cleaning of all bathrooms, deep cleaning of all classrooms, including desks and chairs, and deep cleaning all our hallways.
SNOW REMOVAL
District 33 hires a subcontractor to plow the parking lots and sidewalks within the school
property while the custodians maintain the sidewalks during times of light snow and ice.
Please report any areas that need attention to the school office.
EMERGENCY DAY LEARNING INFORMATION
District 33 schools occasionally close during extreme summer and winter weather. When possible, the administration will make every attempt to determine and communicate school closings by 5:30 AM on the affected day.
If there is a school closure, the D33 administration may have students participate in asynchronous learning from home instead of canceling classes. Asynchronous instruction is when students learn on their own schedule within a specific time frame.
When there is a need for an emergency learning day, District 33 will provide 5 hours of asynchronous school work to the students. This will be via choice boards posted on the district website or paper packets supplied to the students in advance. Staff will also be available via Google Meets and email to support students and families should questions arise.
If two or more consecutive emergency days are needed, a traditional “snow day” will be called for the 2nd and all subsequent days, extending the school year's end.
