Before she was Famous
Emily DIckinson was born on December 10, 1830 in Amherst Massachusetts to a rich family. She started writing as a teenager. She attended Amherst Academy, founded by her grandfather, until 1849. She suffered from depression and anxiety. She lived at her homestead to take care of her mother, and was never married. At the age 56 she died of a kidney disease.

After her Death
Some of her works were published at the time of her death. Her sister, Lavinia Dickinson, found hundreds of her poems. The first publication of her poems was in 1890 with other volumes to follow. Poems of Emily Dickinson was published in 1955. Emily Dickinson profoundly influenced the direction of 20th century poetry.
