TCS News to Know

For the Week of March 20, 2023

Big picture

Dear Families,

Last Friday, March 17th, was the end of the 3rd Marking Period. Spring Break is next week. All of these are signs that we are now in the homestretch of the 2022-23 school year. As we move into spring, we have spring sports, prom, honors night, and so much more to look forward to! This is also the time when all students start to feel restless and less focused, especially seniors! Please encourage your child to still give their best effort on all of their work. The weeks will fly by and before we know it, we will be talking about summer vacation!

State testing will begin the week after we return from Spring Break. Please review the testing dates listed below in the newsletter. Attendance on your child's testing date is very important. Making note of these dates will help your student to feel more prepared for testing!

We also want to highlight Kindergarten Registration!! Having an early count of what to expect for the 2023-24 school year is very helpful. If you know of a family looking for a small school that is big on connections, opportunities, and education, encourage them to enroll their student at Tekonsha! Please be sure to share this information! The best advertising is word-of-mouth!

T-Town Tech Heads Into Competition!

On March 23-25, 2023 Tekonsha High School’s robotics team, T-Town Tech, will travel to Lakeview High School for their very first competition. Under strict rules, limited time and resources, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program an industrial-size robot to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It's as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Coaches Ryan Groholske and Matt Lindsey have gone above and beyond to make this first year of robotics fun and educational.

Good luck to all of the T-Town Tech team members: Vayda Nyland, Caleb Emison, Preston Pombier, David Cole, and Barric Groholske. Special shout-out to team mom, Krista Groholske!

A Leprechaun, Laughter, and Magical Memories!

Students were ready for St. Patrick's Day at Tekonsha Schools! Kindergarten students made some fancy hats earlier in the week and students created a collection of leprechaun traps to set out! Since we didn't have school on Friday, March 17, everyone had a chance to celebrate on Thursday, March 16, when the HS Student Council handed out special 4-leaf clover suckers to all students for a special treat. Most exciting of all, a leprechaun actually snuck into our school on Thursday!!! Students tried to catch that pesky prankster, but he was too tricky and got away! We love that school is not just about learning, but also about making magical memories!

State Testing Starts After Break

The school year is flying by and spring is quickly approaching. As directed by the Michigan Department of Education, Tekonsha Community Schools will be participating in standardized testing. It is required for all students in grades 3-11 to participate in assessments regardless if they are attending school in-person or virtually.

How can you help your students do their best?

  • Ensure that your child arrives at school on time.

  • Have your child eat a healthy breakfast at home or encourage them to eat the free breakfast provided by school.

  • Ensure that your child eats a healthy dinner the night before.

  • Ensure that your child gets a good night’s sleep.

  • Ensure that your child’s Chromebook is charged and in their backpack.

  • Talk to them about the importance of testing and gently encourage them to do their best.

Art & History Connections

During the month of February, students in Mrs. Aryn Henry's elementary art classes studied different African-American artists. The classes discussed the artists' style, technique, artistic inspiration, and the message behind one of their pieces. The kids then recreated the piece of art they studied. Below are the artists studied by each grade level, along with some of the student work! They did a great job!

  • Kindergarten & 1st grade - Alma Woodsey Thomas
  • 2nd Grade - Faith Ringgold
  • 3rd Grade - Jacob Lawrence
  • 4th Grade - Romare Bearden

Student Congrats!

Congratulations to the Tekonsha Elementary TEACHER'S CHOICE Indians of the Week for the week of March 13 - March 17. Each teacher was able to identify the characteristics that they were highlighting within their own classroom for the week! Students this week were recognized for having a sense of humor, being patient, being a class contributor, showing care in one's work, being a reliable participant, and showing growth!!!
