From the principal
Dear Parents & Caregivers
Welcome to Education Week 2020. It has been a number of months since our last newsletter, with COVID -19 we had so much information we needed to disseminate, that we made the decision to cut out the newsletter for a period of time. However, we have decided that in Term 3 we should again have a newsletter in Weeks 3, 6, and 9, with life at HPPS returning to normal as much as possible.
It has been an unprecedented time in 2020 and we have all felt the effects of the pandemic. Being able to return to school again this term with face to face teaching has been enjoyable for everyone. There have been many changes to school life, but our classrooms are great hubs of learning, with happy and engaged students.
I have really loved the opportunity to greet our students most mornings as well as wish them well in the afternoon. We know it is difficult for parents and carers to only have very restricted access to school but we have all managed very well and all our staff greatly appreciate your cooperation.
We are trying our CBS this week via Zoom at school. While we can’t invite parents, we are trying to return to pre COVID school life as much as possible. We also had our PSSA trials last week and will trial the first Gala day on August 28 if we are still able to, and ask that parents adhere to the protocol of non-attendance so our students can have this opportunity. Unfortunately we have been advised to postpone our Kindergarten excursion due next week. However, we are still planning excursions for best case scenario later in the year.
I hope you enjoy our newsletter, and that we continue to experience the many wonderful aspects of school life at HPPS in Term 3, if not in our usual manner, through new and exciting opportunities.
Best wishes,
Kelly Paton
Principal

Creature Features Success!
Recently Camden Council held their 'Creature Features' competition for Camden residents aged 5-12 years. Entrants were required to create a creature with strange features, just like our local platypus. Many students from Stage One took part in the competition, allowing them to combine their creativity and visual art skills with their science unit about living things. Students had to think about where in Camden their creature would live, what it would eat, how it would communicate and why Camden local area would be a suitable home for it. Students wrote entries explaining their strange creature and all its features.
The 2 winners, as voted by Mayor of Camden Theresa Fedeli, were Theo (TJ) from 2G and
Lucy K from 2T. Eva C from 2G was also awarded as highly commended. They received prize packs from Camden Council, including sustainability resources, animal cards, art materials and gardening kits.
Congratulations to all HPPS students for their entries and thank you to the teachers for supporting such an enriching experience. Awarded entries can be viewed on Council's Facebook page.
Public Speaking Is For Everyone!
The HPPS Public Speaking Competition will be occurring during Term 3, with all students K-6 presenting a prepared speech (written in class) and an impromptu speech to their peers. Class teachers will be selecting a representative to compete in the stage final during Week 10.
We will also once again be involved in the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition, with students from Year 3 to 6 offered this competition as an optional experience this year. The competition aims to heighten students' awareness of multicultural issues whilst developing their interest and skills in public speaking. There will be two representatives from Stage 2 and Stage 3 who will be representing HPPS. Students interested in this competition will need to prepare their speech at home and be ready to present it at the end of Week 3. Please see Miss Purser for further information on the topics and requirements for this competition.
Education Week
Education Week is an annual state-wide event that celebrates the NSW public education community. This year, Education Week will run from Monday 3rd August to Friday 7th August 2020 and the theme is ‘Learning Together’. It’s a theme that reflects an incredible year for NSW public school students, staff and parents, and the partnerships that have been strengthened in response.
This Education Week, we embrace the whole Harrington Park Public School community, highlighting the achievements of your local school and the role of public schools as the cornerstone of their communities.
Unfortunately, restrictions on visitors to school sites are still in place, but this will not stop us from sharing with our community all the wonderful learning, growth and achievements of our students and school.
Here are some of the ways we will celebrate learning together in a virtual world during Education Week 2020.
Facebook Videos: Each stage has created a short film using photos and video clips. These videos will be uploaded throughout the week for you to have a glimpse into your child’s classroom and their daily life at school in 2020.
Poster Competition: All classes from K-6 discussed the theme ‘Learning Together’ and each child had the opportunity to create a poster to reflect this concept. One students poster from each year was chosen and will be posted this week on the schools Facebook page.
I would like to thank every child for their creative and colourful posters.
In-class collaboration: This week students will be participating in a range of collaborative activities with their peers to celebrate the theme.
Join us for #EdWeek20 as we celebrate learning together with our students, parents, teachers, and our community.
First Aid
If a student is sent to the office with flu like symptoms we will call their parents to organise for them to be collected as soon as possible.
Your child should not attend school if they are showing any flu like symptoms.
Your support in keeping our school healthy and safe is appreciated.

Morning Duty of Care
Our teachers are on duty at school from 8:30am each morning. Unfortunately we have noticed a growing number of students arriving before this time in the mornings. These children are unsupervised. We urge all parents not to send their children to school before 8:30am. We realise that work commitments have an impact, however, should this be an issue for you please consider before school care providers such as Camp Australia.

Does your child have a medical condition?
If your child has a medical condition, please inform the school.
If it is a condition that requires medication that has been prescribed by a doctor to be administered during the day by staff, please return the attached form to the front office along with the medication.
The medication needs to be provided to the school in the original box.
Prescribed medication must be for this student with the correct name and dosage noted on the container.
If the condition requires an Action Plan, these need to be acquired from your doctor.
All medical forms and Action Plans are available for download on our school website.
They can be found under the "Supporting our Students - Student Health & Safety" tab.
Dangerous Parking Issues
There have been many complaints and concerns raised regarding parents dropping children off in the entrance of the staff carpark. Then reversing out, narrowly missing children who are crossing the road.
This is a great concern and we please ask you to refrain from stopping here to let your children out, as it places other children in danger.
Thank you for your co-operation.
Payments to the school through POP
Did you know you can pay for siblings in one transaction through our POP (Parent Online Payment) System?
