Duties/Responsibilities:
Direct and may participate in the preparation, seasoning, and cooking of salads, soups, fish, meats, vegetables, desserts, or other foods. May plan and price menu items, order supplies, and keep records and accountsAverage Hours/Working Schedule/Working Locations:
Restaurant: 7 days a week, 12-14 hours a day
Cooking for Hotels: 5 days a week, 40-50 hours a week
Catering Company: Vary depending on the type of catering company and amount of functions there are
Retail Food Service Jobs: 7 days a week, 9 hours a day
Civil/Public Services: Will work certain days and get days off. Need to work any day. 8-12 hours a day
Working as a Private Chef: On call 24 hours a day. Working for one family
TV Chef: Average day shooting will be around 12 hours, but will not be cooking the entire time. Some shoots may vary for 30 minutes to 1 hour
Salary/Wage Potential: $34,000-85,000+ annually depending on the type of chef
Education Needed
Formal Training Programs: Offered by community colleges, universities, and culinary institutes. Some chefs complete certificate programs that lasts a few months, while others earn 2-year associate's or 4 year bachelor's degree.
