2Mu Busy Bee News
Weeks of December 10, 2018 & December 17, 2018
Readers' Workshop~
- As Readers, we read more non-fiction books and learned how to use context clues to help us make meaning for unknown words.
- We also read many versions of Cinderella ~ Cinderella, Yeh-Shen, The Korean Cinderella, Adelita, and The Egyptian Cinderella. We compared and contrasted the different versions and we mapped the various countries the stories took place.
- we also read and discussed 2 different versions of The Gingerbread House. As culminating activity, we make our own gingerbread houses using milk cartons.
Writers' Workshop~
- As writers', we worked more on our non-fiction books. We added longer and stronger sentences within our chapters.
- We also completed a literature response for each of the versions of Cinderella that we read during Readers' Workshop.
Mathematicians~
- As Mathematicians, we started Unit 4, learning about time, money and place value.
- We learned that the short hand on the clock is the hour hand which you read and write first. The minute hand is the longer hand and is written with two-digits.
- some tips for knowing the difference between the hour and the minute hand: Since the word hour is a short word, using this idea as short hand/ short word = hour hand and minute is a longer word/longer hand= minute hand.
- We started learning more about place value using Base-10 blocks. We learned that we can bundle up 10 longs to equal 1 flat (100) or 10 cubes to make 1 long (10).
- To reinforce our addition and subtraction facts, we played games like Addition Top-It, Subtraction Top-it, and Even and Odds.
Science~
- During Science, we experimented making mixtures of liquids with waters. We made observations of how the liquids (dish soap, hand soap, fabric softener, oil, and corn syrup) We observed what happens as soon as we combined the liquids with water, what happened after we shook the mixture, and after the mixture settled overnight.
- We learned that liquid mixtures can have layers, become foamy, and/or diluted.
- We learned that heaver liquids settle at the bottom.
- As scientists, we also completed an experiment to see if toothpaste is a solid or a liquid. We added toothpaste to water and documented our observations. Then, we shook the mixture and noticed that the toothpaste dissolved and got foamy. Stay tuned to see what happens after the mixture settles overnight...
