Dress Code/Discipline Philosophy Update
In addition to our dress code conversation, we also talked with students about behavior choices in the classroom setting &/or hallways. It is extremely important that all students feel safe throughout the day, respecting the personal space of others & our educational environment. As we get to know students, reminders of our expectations may result in disciplinary actions. Our goal throughout middle school is to educate our students by supporting them through the learning process in both academic & social situations.
"Even when we discipline, we must be kind, fair, and respectful. Overall, we must strive to ensure that every child feels welcomed, valued, seen, and wanted (Rebecca, 2018)." - Dr. John Gaines
Healthy Youth Survey
Port Susan Middle School is participating in the Washington State Healthy Youth Survey on October 12th (Longer Advisory Schedule HERE). Students in grades 6 and 8 will participate in the survey. 7th grade students will use this time for study hall.
The Healthy Youth survey includes questions related to physical activity and diet, unintentional and intentional injury, substance use, abuse, risk and protective factors, and access to school-based services. Survey results are used by schools, communities and state agencies to plan programs to support our youth and reduce their risks.
Participation is voluntary and the students' answers are anonymous. More information about this survey linked HERE. Mrs. Niegemann will begin this survey through our google meet and go over directions for students. Again, this is voluntary and students may skip questions and/or opt out of participating. Please contact calmanza@stanwood.wednet.edu if you have questions about the survey and/or would like to opt your student out of participating.
Fall Conferences
October 27th, 28th and 29th are early release days for parent-teacher conferences. The schedule for those days will be 7:40 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. for secondary schools. Please note that the 27th is a Wednesday but is not a late start day. We will soon be reaching out to you to schedule conferences. You will have the option to attend in person or virtually via Google Meets.

10 Day Quarantine Message
Stanwood Camano School District Families:
At the guidance of both Snohomish and Island County Health Districts we will be shortening our close contact quarantine period to 10 days. Beginning Monday, September 27, any student or staff member who is determined to be a close contact to someone who is COVID positive will need to be quarantined for 10 calendar days. As before, a quarantine restriction does not affect other family members who are not determined to be close contacts. Students and staff who are quarantined are expected to remain home, avoiding contact with anyone outside their household, during this 10-day period (e.g., extracurricular activities, etc.)
This decision was made, along with several other districts in our area, in order to return our staff and students back to school as quickly as possible without sacrificing safety. This move is being made with the guidance of our local health departments; it may be rescinded by local health departments, if circumstances dictate a change back to a more conservative timeline.
Please see this infographic from the Department of Health that describes how we determine close contacts in schools.
For more information from the Stanwood Camano School District, please see the Friday Family Message.
