Navigator Notables
February 2023 Navigator Elementary Newsletter
Principal Message
One of our daily goals is to welcome each student to school in the morning by Navigator Elementary staff or volunteers out at the bus loop or front drop off. Mr. Karpicke and Mrs. Agopian greet and welcome students at the front door near the drop off loop and a student greeter welcomes each person as they walk into the lobby. Mr. Goodfellow and Mrs. Patalidis greet, help and monitor students as they exit buses. When students enter the building from the bus loop, they are greeted by our specials teachers, Mrs. Shappell and Mr. Chambless. Willow and I greet students as they turn down the hall toward classrooms and Mrs. Ransom gives each student a warm welcome as they continue down to their classroom.
As we head into the February, I want to highlight a few activities and events for this month. Our PTO has organized the Navigator Elementary Talent Show for February 15. Students that are participating are expected to attend the dress rehearsal on Monday, February 13 after school. Mid-winter break is scheduled for February 17-20. There is no school for that Monday and Friday.
Sincerely,
Ruth Badalucco
Principal

Volleyball will be our sport for the remainder of February. Watch for the information on a Gus Macker style basketball extravaganza in March.

In February, we are going to continue building on perspective (January’s theme). Also we will be exploring elements and principles of art with different mediums.
Music - Ms. Schuster
We will be continuing our studies of music around the world as well as introducing new concert music, notation, and instrument fundamentals!
Computer Science - Mr. Chambless
Students have been working hard on their typing skills and are preparing to get back into coding. For February, we will be exploring conditionals (if/then scenarios) in games. Tasks are getting trickier, but I know that your student is well prepared and up for the task.
Mrs. Miles - Student & Family Specialist News
I am aware that many of our students have recently experienced the death of a loved one. We work with Ele’s Place in Ann Arbor to offer an 8 week grief group that can be very helpful if your student would like to participate. I hope to start this group in March and am gathering interest and permission now. Please reach out to me if this is something you and your student think would be beneficial: lmiles@pinckneypirates.org.
Another grief resource in our community is Ashley’s Friends. They meet in Howell and it is for kids ages 5-18 and the adults who care for them. They have dinner at 6 and then meet until 7:45. If you would like to register please call 810-599-0178.

Hearing Screening for Fourth Grade Students
The Livingston County Health Department will be conducting Hearing Screening at Navigator.
All Health Departments in Michigan routinely screen hearing to help identify hearing loss as early as possible and to reduce preventable hearing loss and ear disease by assisting families in obtaining the appropriate medical care.
Students in Junior Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade will receive hearing screening. Hearing screening will also be provided to students in other grades who are last-year follow-ups and parent/teacher requests. Students who do not pass the initial screening will be rescreened. If a student does not pass the rescreen, a letter will be mailed home recommending the student see their doctor for further evaluation.
HEARING SCREENING is scheduled on March 2, 2023 and March 23, 2023 for any needing re-screening.
Please notify the school (prior to the first day of screening) and provide child’s name and teacher if:
• You have a concern for your child and your child is not in the above grades
• You do not want your child screened
Please call the Health Department at 517-546-9850 and ask for the Hearing & Vision Coordinator if your child has a programmable shunt or any implanted medical device. (Child should not be screened due to magnets in audiometer headphones.)

Students in 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th grade will receive vision screening. Vision screening will also be provided to students in other grades who are last-year follow-ups and parent/teacher requests.
