GRADE 3 IS ROCKIN' IT AT T.H.E.

If you're looking for a team that has embraced all that PLCs have to offer, look no further. After the Terrace Heights third grade team attended the PLC Institute this summer, they came back to East Valley ready for change. This school year, they have embodied a culture of collaboration and it's showing in their classrooms! Not only are their students able to work more independently, but they've also been demonstrating improved growth and achievement on local and state assessments.

What has changed in their practice?

After meeting with this team, the general consensus was that working together has provided them with the support they need to be successful. They no longer feel alone; instead they feel like they have permission to make professional changes that benefit their students together.

What do Christina, Kendra, Kamy & Teresa attribute to their PLC success?

  1. Keeping things simple! They have really focused on identifying their "Big Rocks" and they use probes that measure these very specific targets.
  2. Data driven instruction - They have been intentional about using their data meeting time effectively to measure specific targets and analyze student growth.
  3. Shared interests - These ladies truly believe that all kids are everybody's kids and they work together to meet all students where they are at, with what they need.
  4. Push-in Intervention - Last year, they sent kids out of the classroom for math intervention, but now they use a different model. Working together, they realized that they could better serve their students by bringing intervention into their classrooms. Now, they use their intervention time to do small group rotations which allow the teachers more time to work with struggling students one-on-one.
  5. Levels with a why - They are using their PLC time to analyze data gathered from their intervention groups. Being intentional with data analysis has given their identified student levels a "why". They're not just low, medium or high anymore... Now, they're struggling with place value. It's just more specific.

What makes their PLC work?

  1. TRUST! They feel comfortable asking each other questions and feel supported.
  2. Open Communication - They don't just meet once each week, they have open lines of communication and discuss what they're seeing regularly throughout the week.
  3. They Reach Out- They have found that cross collaboration with third grade teams from throughout the district has provided them with different tools and feedback to improve their instruction. Some members also attended Araceli's PD sessions and gained helpful strategies and knowledge from this opportunity.
