Happy MONDAY McKinley Skippers! I hope you are all ready to make it a great week.
We were excited to send our 5th graders off to Hiram House Camp this morning! Thanks to all of our teacher and student chaperones. We know they are going to have a wonderful time making memories together.
We are looking forward to continuing to celebrate our students during the month of October! Congratulations to the 5th grade classes who were the winners of the Golden Fork AND the Apple Tree Challenge! Great job grade 5, we are proud of you for being role models throughout the building.
This week is Spirit Week for the Fairport Harbor Schools! Tomorrow students should dress like their teachers and teachers like students! We are ready to make it a great week. :)

Thank you to all the students, faculty and families who participated in our "Sock"tember sock collection for the Sub Zero Mission. McKinley collected 504 pairs of new socks for those in need in our community! Mrs Vahcic's Kindergarten class won the contest collecting 106 pairs for their classroom. They have chosen to adopt Hunter the Barn Owl from Lake Metroparks Penitentiary Glen Wildlife Center. We are working on finalizing the paperwork and setting up a school wide assembly where Mrs. Vahcic's class will have VIP seating.
A huge shout out to our Scholastic Book fair coordinator Shawna Layne and all those who volunteered their time to make our 1st Book fair of the year such a great success.
Room parent assignments have been sent home. Thank you all for your interest in helping with the classroom parties. The lead homeroom parents will be sending home a letter 2 weeks before the Halloween party with the party details and requests for any needed supplies.
A very special thank you to the parents who attended our 1st PTO meeting. We're looking forward to a great year! Our next meeting is Thursday 10-11-18
Hope everyone has a great week! Please follow us on Facebook for up-to-date information.
School Illness Prevention
Hand, foot and mouth disease is on the rise nationwide this year and we have our first case at McKinley. This disease is caused by a virus that lives in the intestines and is very contagious. It is spread through secretions (runny nose, sneezing). Late summer and early fall are when these types of viruses spread rapidly.
Hand, foot, and mouth disease gets its name from its most prominent symptoms: sores in the mouth and a rash that commonly appears on the hands and feet. Like other illnesses caused by viruses, there’s no cure for hand, foot, and mouth disease. Thankfully, it usually clears up on its own after about a week. Treatment is comfort measures (pain relief for the mouth sores) and hydration. The disease is most contagious before the rash appears, so it can be difficult to avoid catching it.
Prevention is simple, although it's just the sort of thing kids have trouble remembering to do! Washing your hands carefully is a key part of not spreading the virus. Cover your face when you cough or sneeze and never share food and drinks. The virus can live on surfaces for days. We are being extra diligent with our cleaning at McKinley and hand washing reminders to students. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Bodi, School Nurse at hbodi@fhevs.org

International Baccalaureate Updates
The 2018-19 school year is off to an amazing start. We celebrated our first assembly highlighting the McKinley compass point of HONESTY! Students will be working on being principled and reflective as they demonstrate the IB attitudes of appreciation, respect and integrity.
Learning the Learner Profile through PBiS!
Classes will have the opportunity to earn a trip to West Orchards on September 28th by winning the “Golden Fork” or the “Apple Tree Challenge”. In the classroom, staff and students are working to create essential agreements. These agreements will establish routines and procedures for how the classroom will function. Essential Agreements are an important part of our school climate. Every working group (staff and students) collaborate to create documents that state the things we value and how we work together to accomplish goals.
Share your Cultural Traditions! Get INVOLVED in the PYP
Finally, for the fall season, our McKinley family would like to learn more about our community by exploring the different cultures of our families and friends. This means digging deeper into different forms of artistic heritage, customs and traditions. If you, or someone you know, is interested in sharing cultural traditions, please contact Sabrina Rowan at 440-354-5400 ext. 208 or srowan@fhevs.org.
