Making a difference, one person at a time
Trying Times (Nov. 9 - 16)
Years ago as a teacher I shared this American Revolution quote with my students. I explained the meaning and why it was a challenging era in our history.
In no way will I compare myself and my days to this age, but the quote seemed rather fitting.
To be very vulnerable with all of you, this past week was one of my most challenging as a professional. The feelings I felt ranged from violated to deep sadness.
I fully understand that during the month of November the focus is on thankfulness and gratitude. That opening doesn't seem to fit the monthly focus. As I struggled through the week a few things happened that saved me.
First, I'm blessed with amazing friends that check on me and share my own words back to me. This week what I heard was, "What would you say to me?" That was followed up with, "Overcoming adversity strengthens us and adds to our life experiences."
- Every single one of us deals with trying times. I'm thankful for many people that won't allow me to isolate myself. It's a reminder to us all that in tough times we need to lean on one another.
Second, if you're anything like me your mind goes to worst case scenario rather than realistic outcome. I'm thankful for the unexpected and unconditional support. When kind words are specific and unsolicited they have the ability to mean more.
- This is a reminder that when our intention is to help and support one another we should be specific and non-judgmental.
Third, find a healthy distraction. As some of you are aware I've been training for my third marathon. Saturday, November 9th I ran the Big Bear Marathon in California. This healthy (somewhat torturous) endeavor was a needed shift in my mind.
- When we eat, sleep and breathe our work it can add unhealthy stress and anxiety to us. This causes burnout, anger, and sadness. As I was reminded this week, we must find healthy distractions that allow us to refresh and live our life.
Fourth, helping others can also help you. I sat on the bus heading to the starting line and a younger gentleman sat by me. His legs were bouncing a bit and he said, "Is this your first marathon?" I responded with nope, it's my third. He then asked for advice. For the next 35 minutes we talked and he shared some real stuff. I could feel myself relaxing and feeling more positive when I was helping others.
- One of the best forms of personal therapy is to shift the focus from yourself to others. When we serve and support others around us we subsequently help ourselves. During challenging times think of ways to lift others. A note, an anonymous treat on the desk, or inviting a person out for coffee and a talk. Kind gestures make us feel better.
At the end of the day I've done this long enough to realize more challenges will occur. Yet I also find strength in knowing that I don't have to go it alone. I hope that is the message you all take in. We have each other and that's what matters most.
