NEW STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Shane Marken- BHS Industrial Arts
Mr. Marken was born in Yreka, California in 1989. His parents moved to Coos Bay before his first birthday. He attended school at Coos Bay but graduated from North Bend High School. Since graduating in 2007, he has been in the fabrication and welding fields. He started out as an entry-level welder at Giddings Boat Works in Charleston, Oregon building and repairing commercial fishing vessels. Mr. Marken has also worked side by side with the Army Corps of Engineers to build a debris barrier at the outlet of Spirit Lake at the base of Mt. Saint Helens in Washington. His high school shop teacher had a great impact on his decision to change careers from being a steelworker/shipbuilder to being a CTE/Industrial Arts teacher at Bandon High School. Mr. Marken enjoys his students at BHS and hopes to be able to have an impact on them in the way his shop teacher impacted him. Some of his hobbies include being a dad, hunting, fishing, camping, and spending time on his motorcycle. Something that might surprise you about Mr. Marken is he doesn't like flying in airplanes but helicopters are just fine! If he could learn to do anything it would be to play the guitar. His favorite line from a movie is, "Talk to me Goose," Top Gun. His least favorite chore to do is the dishes!

Speech Team Tournament
The Speech and Debate team had their first tournament this last weekend, and 16 of our 20-person team competed! All of the kids have been hard at work over the last four weeks preparing for this tournament and they gave their all against 6 other schools in Southern Oregon.
Some rounds were separated by first-time competitors (novice) and returning competitors (open), if an event is not listed as a novice or open below, it means first-time competitors competed against returners.
Here are the results from our first tournament:

- Maya Tulles - 1st place Dramatic Interpretation
- Daniel Cabrera - 1st place Open Prose
- Daniel Cabrera - 1st Place Humorous Interpretation
