PRAIRIE POST

Message from the Principal

Hello Prairie Families,

It's been a great week here at Prairie! Coach Courtney has been here this week for Playworks facilitating practice recesses for all classes. K-1 classes learned the game Bandaid Tag. 2-5 classes learned Olympic Four Square and Champion vs. Challengers. All classes worked on using "ro sham bo" or rock, paper, scissors as a conflict resolution strategy. I've seen learners all over using "ro sham bo" to solve conflicts that come up during recess all on their own. Awesome!

Janelle Verhagen is back from maternity leave! Janelle is our health room assistant who cares for all students who come to visit her during the day. Students were happy to see her familiar face!

Thank you for your help with reinforcing our expectations around bike riding on school property. Students are not allowed to ride bikes (or scooters) on school property during arrival, dismissal or during school hours. I was able to visit each classroom on Thursday to review this expectation and was happy to see that students followed the expectation after our discussions.

Have a great weekend!

Carroll University - Literacy Methods Course

We have the opportunity to partner with Carroll University in 1st and 2nd-grade classrooms this semester. Carroll University students who are studying to be teachers meet at Prairie on Tuesdays and Thursdays with their "Literacy Methods" professor. They study theory and assessment and instructional practices during their class. Then they have the opportunity to go into our 1st and 2nd-grade classrooms to work directly with students and learn from our teachers. The benefit for our students is that all students continue to meet with their teachers in small groups and individually, but they now get added attention focused on individualized literacy goals from Carroll Students.

Staff Spotlight

My name is Mrs. Gerlach and I have been teaching kindergarten at Prairie Elementary School for 19 years. I am proud to have been a Puma for the majority of my career and I consider the students, families and staff that I have had the pleasure to serve to be family! Prior to teaching at Prairie, I taught for 1 year at Rose Glen Elementary School, as well as both 4K and 5K in the Cudahy School District. I have a Master's Degree in Education from Marian University, where I had an emphasis on working with at-risk children. My Bachelor's Degree is from Concordia University. Outside of school, I enjoy traveling with my family. This past summer, we traveled to Belize. We swam with sharks, snorkeled the barrier reef, and enjoyed the local cuisine of ceviche and coconut curry.

Christmas Clearing Council

It is the time of year to distribute Christmas Clearing Council applications! For those who do not know, the Christmas Clearing Council (CCC) helps provide Christmas gifts for families who may struggle to afford gifts for their children. It is an awesome program that many families utilize each year. There are a few qualifications: you must be a Waukesha County resident AND your child must be eligible for Free/Reduced Lunch and/or meet the household income eligibility requirements. Please feel free to fill out the application (one per family), and send back to Mr. Endsley or the Prairie Office.

Applications are DUE Friday November 15, 2019.
