Cougar Connection
December 2020
From Principal Lawrence
Hi Shea Feeder Families -
Before you get too consumed with all your holiday plans, I'd like to remind you there is still an opportunity to register your child for electives at Shea. Please see the newsletter linked below for more information and click on the registration link to signify your preferences for electives for the 2021-2022 school year. This is the best way to ensure your child gets the electives that you and your child desire.
I wish you and your families a safe and happy holiday season!

Free Resources for Families
We are in a pandemic. In addition to challenges with relationships, illnesses and added stress, many of us are struggling with food, jobs and housing. In some way, we have all been affected. No one wants to be in this position, and it is common to struggle with asking for help. Resources have become available to provide some needed relief, but often one thing stands in the way...letting someone know we can use a little help. If this resonates with you, know you are not alone in needing some support in this season. There is no shame in this- we are in this together, and many of us are struggling. Below are some resources that might be helpful.
Food Bags for Students in the Lobby Please help yourself to one free food bag per student from our community partner, Paradise Valley Emergency Food Bank. The bags contain 2 non-perishable breakfasts and lunches as well as snacks. If you would like your student/s to receive this resource when we return to school, please e-mail Sharon Denny (shdenny@pvlearners.net) and she will add you to the list! When we are in school, food bags go home with students on Friday. Sharon also has a number of resources that can help out with food for your family. Don’t hesitate to connect with her! | Low Cost Internet and faster speed Cox's existing Connect2Compete plan is offering a low-cost internet plan for families that qualify for free and reduced lunch, SNAP benefits, or public housing. Cox Communications has doubled the speed for this plan for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year. If you sign up before Dec. 31, 2020 you will receive two months of free service and pay $9.95 monthly going forward. Now just might be the time to apply for free and reduced lunch to qualify for low cost internet (see below)! Visit cox.com/c2c to qualify for the Connect2Compete plan. | Meal Service during Distance LearningJust a reminder that PVSchools is providing free meals to any child 18 or younger, regardless of Free and Reduced Lunch application status or school enrollment while we are in Distance Learning. A win-win for your student and our school!
Enrolling in the Free and Reduced Program is important for students and our school! This school year, as all students are receiving free breakfast and lunch, it is important that you know Desert Cove receives funding based on the number of students enrolled in the program. Funding is critical these days, and is used to provide needed services to our students. We need your help with this! Students qualify for the program based on family income at the time of the application. We can’t emphasize enough the importance of having our families submit an application. If you are not sure if you qualify, when you submit the application, District will let you know! ...and just a heads up that you are able to submit a new application any time your financial situation changes.
Click here for the easy, on-line application. Paper applications are also available in the office.
