Unit of Inquiry ; Sharing The Planet

Central Idea: Change can be achieved by designing and taking action on local global and issues.

Lines of Inquiry:

  • The creation of the UN Global Goals
  • Access to equal opportunities
  • How are action can lead to change and sustainability

We are now coming to the end of the unit and the children have been busy in groups researching and gathering information on their Global Goal and showing off their skills and talents in creating an I-Movie. The children have combined language with visual footage to create a persuasive message with the purpose of changing our thinking and lead toward a better world in 2030. Some of these great messages were shared with Year 5 & 6 in 6M's Class Assembly.

In English, the Year 6 children have continued looking at how persuasive language can be used in letter writing in order to bring about change. We have particularly looked at using powerful words, hyperboles and cunning phrases to strengthen our points of argument and present alternative solutions.

Maths: Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

In Maths, we are continuing to look at the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages. The following objectives will be addressed over the next two weeks.

  • I can recognise approximate proportions of a whole and use simple fractions and percentages to describe these

  • I can explain and model the relationships between fractions, decimals and percentages

  • I can read, write, order, and compare decimals, percentages and common fractions
  • I can convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages

  • I can recognise simple equivalence between fractions, decimals and percentages, e.g.1/4 = 0.25 = 25%
  • I can use known facts to mentally rename fractions to the lowest term, e.g. 3/12 = ¼

Next week we will be moving on explore ratio, proportion and probability.

Please remember to encourage your child to work on any times tables facts that they still do not know. Often this is the barrier to feeling confident when working on this aspect of Numeracy.

There are additional resources on Mathletics, Study Ladder and Khan Academy should you wish to support your child with their home learning. Lots of online games are also available.

Dialogue In The Dark Experience

Two of our Year 6 classes have thoroughly enjoyed their visits to the Dialogue In The Dark Experience. It's been an amazing time for all and really makes the children consider others in less-fortunate circumstances. Please spend some time reflecting on the experience with your child after the visit and if you haven't been yourself, perhaps make a time to visit again with your family!

Check with your child's teacher if there's still a chance for you to help out on this great trip!

Year 6 Assemblies

We thoroughly enjoyed watching 6RO's excellent assembly last week. Well done to all the children for a creative and informative review of the Explorer unit.

This week we saw 6M give a great performance based around the Global Goals and how we can all get involved in the issue, take action and bring about changes in peoples' minds and lead towards a better world in 2030.

General Notices:

  • Homework: Remember to check the VLE homework page every Wednesday please. We still have a number of pupils not handing in weekly homework.

  • New Unit: We will be starting our 'Who We Are' unit next week, where the children will learn more about themselves, their bodies and the changes that they will experience during puberty. This is a great opportunity for parents to spend some extra time with your son/ daughter to discuss things in more detail as well as answer any questions that arise.

  • Upcoming Y6 Exhibition: Express Yourself!

    Call for Community Experts for the Year 6 Exhibtion

    Once again this year the Year 6 PYP Exhibition will fall within the transdisciplinary theme of 'How we express ourselves'. Students will have the opportunity to inquire into a wide array of art forms and types of expression. They will explore in-depth a particular art form that resonates with them and build their exhibition around that. The exhibition process culminates with the the exhibition itself on the evening of May 25th.

    We are putting a call out to our parent and wider community in hopes of inspiring you to share your talents, passions and interests with our students. Last year we had several parents volunteer to work with small groups of students throughout the exhibition process.

    Exhibition will begin in full swing after Easter but we wanted to start early with community support.
