The Dragons' Lair
August Edition
From the Principals
Hello Dragon Families:
What a great start to the new school year! The students and teachers were so excited to meet all their new friends and start learning new things!
In case you haven’t had a chance to meet us yet, let us introduce ourselves:
Sandy Myers is the Principal at Silver Creek Elementary School. This is my fourth year as principal at Silver Creek Elementary. Before that, I was the principal at Silver Creek Primary for 6 years. My family and I live in Sellersburg. We have three children. My girls both attend Silver Creek Schools and my son graduated from SCHS. My husband and I believe Sellersburg is the best location around to raise and educate our children!
Jon Sifers is our Assistant Principal! This is his fourth year serving in this position. He also taught at Silver Creek Elementary School for 8 years. He graduated from Silver Creek High School and is a veteran of the United States Navy. His wife, Liz Sifers, teaches kindergarten at Silver Creek Primary School. They have two children. Reece is 9 years old and Whitley is 7 years old. Reece and Whitley both attend Silver Creek Elementary!
Our door is always open. If you have something you would like to speak with us about, please call the office at 246-3312 to set up an appointment. We are happy to listen and would love to meet each of you! You can also email us at smyers@scsc.school or jsifers@scsc.school.
We, along with our staff, will continue the work to ensure ALL students are learning at high levels. This means that we want ALL students meeting their grade level expectations or above. Teachers have identified what is most important for students to learn. They will teach these lessons in their math and reading blocks. Based on their assessments, we will know who learned and who did not. Our daily FIRE time will allow us time to reteach students that may need more time to learn. It will also allow us to enrich the learning for the students that got it. In addition to this, we have a block of time to work with students that are below grade level. Due to our early dismissal on Wednesdays, teachers will have an opportunity to discuss this work and learn what is working best.
We believe that YOU are the most important teacher in your child’s life. We must work together as partners to ensure ALL students are successful this school year. All of the SCE staff will do everything possible to make sure your child is getting the best possible education!
It is our goal to be sure each child feels safe, enjoys learning, and builds positive character traits. We know we can speak for the whole staff when we say, we are excited to start this new year and can’t wait to get to know each of you and your children!
Parent Portal
If you have not created your Parent Portal account, you will want to do this as soon as possible. This account will follow your child as long as they are enrolled in an SCSC school. This is where you can access grading information, make payments, attendance information, update your contact information, complete annual registration, and make payments to your child's account.
If you do not have access to your parent portal please email your name, your student's name, and your email on file to SCEPortal@scsc.school.
If you have had access in the past, you can simply click on the link for forgot username or forgot password to reset these. That will be much quicker than calling the office.
They were posted on June 3rd for the last quarter.
Car Rider Pick Up
At Silver Creek Elementary we care about the safety of all our students. Please see the following important announcements to help us keep all students safe regarding morning and afternoon car riders. I have created this video to help you better understand as well. (It will be posted on the website for future reference.)
Please remember that our building opens at 7:40 every morning. Officer Tillett, Mr. Sifers, and myself will be at the door to let the kids in. Please do not drop your student off early or let them get out of the car until you see staff opening the door. All morning car riders should use the road behind SCHS. When pulling into our circle PLEASE pull as far forward as possible (even if it is raining). We will let students enter both Door V and Door A. We want to maximize how many students are exiting the cars to get everyone in as quickly as possible. Once stopped safely by the building sidewalk, have your student exit the car and walk into the building.
In the afternoons, we begin dismissing car riders at 3:00. Everyone MUST have the SCE car rider tag to pick up students in the car rider line. Anyone who does not have the tag will be asked to park and go to the office to pick up. Again, this is for student safety. Please make sure all of your approved pick up drivers have an official tag for their car.
New this year, we are going to fill up both the first and second lanes behind SCHS before we begin dismissing. This is to help clear traffic on Renz Avenue. Please pull all the way forward to the painted orange line in lane 1. Once all of lane one is filled to the gate near SCHS' baseball field, begin filling lane 2. We will dismiss all of lane 1 and then dismiss all of lane 2. It is critical that parents follow these procedures so that when we line the students up indoors they will be in order and the line can move smoothly.
Every Wednesday SCE will dismiss approximately 15 minutes early. Please ensure you have made arrangements to pick up or have someone home when the buses arrive. For student safety, buses will not drop off without an adult present. To ensure students are delivered on time for the entire route, bus drivers cannot wait for parents to get home, they must continue on their route. Students will be brought back to the school if there is no one home.
Thank you for understanding and making the appropriate arrangements and for helping us ensure the safety of all SCE students!
Standards Based Report Card
Silver Creek Elementary uses a standards-based grading system to report to families their child's progress. We want to specifically share with you your child's strengths and areas of growth. We have worked to become more intentional on our reporting systems to parents. In the past, we have used 1- 3 scale to report on each standard. Our second grade is going to continue with that scale, which aligns with SCP.
For grades 3-5, we saw the need to be more specific and align with ILEARN's reporting system. We worked and developed the following scale that is now based on a 1-4 range as outlined on the report card.
Please see the chart to better understand how our grades are assigned by the standard.
Technology Agreement
On this form, there is an optional insurance section. This is completely at your discretion. If you would like to opt into the insurance program we need to have your check payable to Silver Creek School Corporation (NOT Silver Creek Elementary) by the end of the week next week, Aug. 12th.
Free and Reduced Lunch Application
We encourage families to apply for assistants for books and the lunch program. This can be done by printing this application and completely filling it out or by clicking on the link in your parent portal. Silver Creek Elementary is a Title I School Wide funded school. This means we receive money based on our percentage of students enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program. The federal money helps us with programs and personnel so we can better meet the needs of our students.
