Free African American Slaves
Leader was a white man named William Lloyd Garrison. A freed slave Frederick Douglass escaped from bondage to become an abolitionist. His newspaper was called the north star.
Temperance Movement
This movement was to reduce the use of alcoholic beverages. Alcohol linked to sickness, poverty, and abusiveness.
Prison Reform
Dorethea Dix was the greatest reformer for prisoners and the mentally ill. She wanted to create separate facilities for both. By the time of her death, 100 facilities were established in the U.S.
Education
Education reformers wanted to improve public schools. Greatest reform movement was Horace Mann for education. Horace established teacher training programs and improved curriculum.
