Weekly Updates
February 8th - 12th
We're trucking along! Keep it going. It's gonna by a busy month- but let's be honest- We are just BUSY all the time. It's just how we prepare and organize that keeps us from the insane asylum.
Student voice surveys are this week- These are important for a couple of reasons- 1) the obvious- they are apart of your evaluations 2) they do give information to reflect on.
A piece of advice when going through these- Throw the outliers out- There will ALWAYS be someone who is not happy and only focuses on what they want you to change for their betterment. Focus on the comments that you can actually do something about and change for the benefit of the whole. Outside perspective keeps us REAL.
Gabby was in my office the other day and I have a sign over my student desk that says "Is it Kind, Is it helpful, Is it necessary... etc." to get students to think about their choices. Gabby's perspective on this... "sometimes it's true and it is necessary to say, but it's not kind. Sometimes, MOM, the truth hurts, but in order to get people to change- you have to share that with them". .... Out of the mouths of babes.
"You must learn a new way to THINK before you can master a new way to BE" - Marianne Williamson
For the Good of All...
Update- So we're on the same page- My procedure is postponed for Tuesday- we're moving it to the end of the month to look at a couple of other things. This is a good thing. I"m rolling with the punches- Which means I'll be working next week. So, we're going to chalk it up to... I'll be in and out. You never know where I'll pop up. :) I'm gonna be trucking along side of you!
REPEATS
STARFISH- We've gotten a few- Deadline is this FRIDAY. Teachers- PLEASE send me a list of students that you think would benefit from a mentor. We're looking at pairing some kids with adults that will build that capacity to succeed. Clearly, ALL of our kids would benefit from this, but we're looking at those kids we talked about at ATMS, and those that you just think are potentially at-risk. (Socially, emotionally, academically) Send me the names- RANK THEM- so I can see how many we're dealing with, and then as usual- NH will do it's magic. <3
Get the Word out!
Please start helping NH get the word out about Kindergarten registration / registration in general (especially for 1st grade). Kindergarten registration for NH is March 29th from 4:00 to 7:00. Information is on our website, and flyers will be going home.
For 2 years now we've had to add classes to K and 1st late in the year. We NEED to avoid this! The only way we can is to get families to register early! Help us get the word out please. This will severely impact our allocations (and pink slipping)!
Instructional
School Cheat Sheets- Sometimes quick sheets are just good to have. This site has a variety of go to references for kids. Easy go to sheets for centers, etc.
I don't Know isn't allowed- Great reference of what to do independently when you "don't know" Its a pretty easy visual for k - 5
Identifying why kids do the things they do- Charted out for you- For me it was a great way to make connections and then come up with a plan. We ALL have reasons for our choices.
Literacy connected to procedures- Great quick read alouds to remind kids of procedures and make connections to school life. Also a great add-on for those that may need extra practice with procedures.
HomeworkOpoloy board- I love this, and it makes it fun for the kids. I'm going to make one and raffle it at the next University Meeting, but for those of you who would / need something to motivate homework completion this is for you!
ADHD / ADD kids- I have one- and she needs background noise- Believe it or not Quiet makes it worse for her! this is an excellent article, and something to think about.
Projecting- Easy ways to get your IPAD to mirror in the classroom. We have some amazing STLP kids that Dammyer is working with. I bet we could teach them this and then they could be at your disposal.
Don't think that our words don't matter.... They do!
