DHS Science Fair February 21, 2018
And the winners are...
Congratulations, FIRST PLACE WINNER, Justin Ma
Justin's project entitled "Properties of Alum and Metal" posed the question, 'How can watch repairmen get rid of minute metallic debris with a chemical known as "alum"?' Precise experimental design and observation lead him to have even more questions. Justin will be showing off his work at Coriell Science Fair as well. We know that he will be successful, since he is VERY able to explain chemical reactivity and hypothesize why his results were surprising.
Nice work, SECOND PLACE WINNER, Claire Logue
Claire is an advocate of healthy eating, including a vegan diet. She was interested by European nations that due not allow certain food preservatives in their foods by law. Her project entitled "Are Natural Food Preservatives as Effective as Artificial Food Preservatives in the Inhibition of Bacterial Growth?" clarified that most artificial preservatives do inhibit microbial growth. The question is, at what cost to health? Keep researching, Claire! We want to know.
Fun idea, THIRD PLACE WINNER, Hannah Gravante
Hannah's project, "A Mind of its Own: A Chemical Reaction that Changes and then Changes Back" investigated the mystery of the Briggs-Rauscher Reaction, and the limiting reagents that make visible reaction in solution. The relevance to our own body reactions made this topic an interesting study.
Cool techniques, Honorable Mention Winner, Justin Jackson-Conner
Justin Jackson-Conner's project entitled, "How Do Cell Phone Conversations Affect Reaction Time?" examined why 26% of accidents on the Nation's highways are caused by distracted driving, through cell phone use. Science is proving why New Jersey has laws against driving and distractions like talking on the phone. Nice job, Justin.
Thank you, Ms. Brewster, DHS Science Fair Advisor and Good luck at Coriell!
Both Justin Ma and Justin Jackson-Conner will be attending the Coriell Science Fair on March 17th-18th at the Camden County Community College in Blackwood, NJ. Those who place at Coriell may move on to the Delaware Valley Regional Science Fair, April 4th-6th.
