Math
We have continued our Combinations within 5 Unit this week. In this unit, students are asked to add and subtract within 5. We have been working to understand the connection between addition and subtraction as well as distinguish between the two when solving equations. In the past few lessons, we have worked on writing equations to represent the addition or subtraction. Then, we completed a number of addition and subtraction facts. Students noticed that we need to pay close attention to the plus or minus sign to determine how to solve the problem. Another objective of this unit is that students should know addition and subtraction facts within 5 fluently. The more we practice these facts the sooner students will have memorized these basic math facts. We will continue working toward this fact fluency and solving word problems in the coming lessons.
Reading
We read another one of my favorite books this week, Enemy Pie, by Derek Munson. The story revolves around a little boy who was having a perfect summer until Jeremy Ross moved into the house down the street and became Enemy Number One. Luckily, Dad had a surefire way to get rid of enemies - Enemy Pie. But one of the secret ingredients is that you have to spend an entire day with the enemy! He learns an effective recipe for turning a best enemy into a best friend. The students asked and answered some questions about this clever book. See if they can tell you more about the story!

Student Led Conferences
The students are excited to share their learning with you at our upcoming Student Led Conferences. In the Friday Folder today, there was a letter with more information and two forms. Please complete the conference preference form with your availability and I will schedule the conference and send you the exact time next week. Also, please complete the Pre-Conference Form to address any questions or concerns that you would like me to answer, so that I can ensure everything is addressed within the student-led conference model. I will send a What to Expect note in the days prior to the conference with more details!
