Hello Glennwood Families,
We have had a wonderful week at Glennwood. Students and teachers have been working very hard on their expeditions to prepare for their Celebrations of Learning. We look forward to seeing everyone for our Winter Musical Celebration next Friday at 8:30 am. Please see below for more details. Thank you to Ms. Pierce for organizing this special event.
The 2022-2023 Georgia Parent Survey is now open. Survey participation is voluntary, but we strongly encourage participation in the surveys to provide schools with critically important data to help guide prevention and intervention strategies. This school data is included in our school's CCRPI score. It is recommended that schools have at least a 75% participation rate. The surveys will remain open through Friday, January 27, 2023.
Here is the link to the survey. Thank you in advance for providing input for this and completing the survey!
Warmest regards,
Holly Brookins, Ph.D.
Principal

Winter Musical Celebration - December 16
Dear Glennwood Families,
We all share a common goal for our children to be safe and protected from harm. Related to that goal, school counselors are required by OCGA 20-2-143 to present annual personal safety lessons designed to prevent sexual abuse, assault awareness, and prevention education. The Think First & Stay Safe™ program is a research-based program that teaches specific personal safety education through interactive classroom lessons, role-playing, and corresponding activities. Think First & Stay Safe™ enables students to take an active and necessary role in protecting themselves from abuse, assault, and exploitation. CSD school counselors reviewed the program and selected it for our students. This program is also listed on Georgia’s Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Prevention Technical Assistance Resource Guide as a best practice program.
Due to the importance of this topic, I want you to know how you may preview the materials and when the counselor will be presenting this information to your child's class. The materials will be available for preview by contacting Mr. Blase at jblase@csdecatur.net and setting up a time with him. The school counselor will offer the sexual abuse prevention and safety lessons to all K-2 students beginning in January following the Holiday Break. This may extend into February if the lessons aren’t completed before then.
You can also learn more about the program and research behind this program at www.childluresprevention.com. Please be aware that more information is provided on the website than is actually used in CSD. The plan for CSD includes: the key concepts taught at all grade levels; each grade reviews what was learned in the previous grade(s) and then learns additional lures or tricks. Specifics are provided here.
If you prefer that your child not participate in the sexual abuse and safety prevention lessons, please send an email indicating your preferences to the school counselor, Jonathan Blase, at jblase@csdecatur.net by Friday, December 16th. Please reach out if you have any questions. Unless documentation is received, your child will participate in the lessons.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Blase
Glennwood School Counselor

Glennwood Staff Appreciation December Event: Hot Cocoa and Treat Bar, hosted by Kindergarten
This year, to show our appreciation for our amazing staff, the Glennwood PTA will be sponsoring a staff snack table in addition to hosting other staff appreciation events later in the year. We are asking each grade level to "stock the table" for a given month; each grade will be asked to sponsor a staff appreciation event twice this year. We kindly ask that each family participate in one of the two opportunities for your grade level (the intention is that a family only needs to participate once).
For December, we're asking Kindergarten families to host a "Hot Cocoa and Treat Bar" for our staff on Thursday, December 15th . If you're a kindergarten family, please visit the Sign Up Genius here to sign up to bring in one or more items for our staff. Please drop off your items with Ms. Reynolds at the front office December 12-14 anytime during school hours and the PTA will assemble the snack table for our staff to enjoy on December 15th. Items can be store-bought or homemade, in bulk or individually packaged. The PTA is also requesting clean up volunteers, so please sign up via the Sign Up Genius if you can volunteer your time to help clean up. If you are unable to purchase items for the table but would like to donate funds towards the event, the PTA is also collecting monetary donations. Please Paypal your donation to the PTA at Treasurer@Glennwoodpta.org with a note that it is for the December Snack Table and we'll take care of it for you.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Staff Appreciation Co-Chairs: Haley Stevens (haleycstevens@gmail.com) or Samantha Bryan (samantha.chopp@gmail.com).

Artwork Help For Glennwood’s Art Teacher:
Each grading period, our Glennwood Art Teacher, Ms. Nadine Howarth, would like help sorting, rolling, and taping "Art Portfolio Bundles" for the students and changing out the artwork on a few of the school Bulletin boards.
Please consider signing up to help. The job should take about an hour of your time. In the comments section, please include the date of your choice from the list of dates, and the time you plan to arrive.
Thank You Glennwood Families
Thank you so much for your Seasons of Giving donations! Due to your generosity, we were able to complete wish lists for a child, and a senior plus provide much-needed grocery store gift cards for 7 other families. We were overwhelmed by your kindness!

News from City Schools of Decatur
Good Troublemaker Award
The late Congressman John Lewis was known for his famous plea to all humans fighting for social justice. “Speak up, speak out, get in the way. Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.” Who in this district, or in your building, has actions that speak louder than their words when it comes to being a good troublemaker for equity? Honor them by telling us more about their actions as champions for equitable educational outcomes in CSD.
Nominate someone else or yourself for the Good Equity Troublemaker Award here by Sunday, January 8, 2023, at 11:59 PM. Contact Anthony Downer at adowner@csdecatur.net with any questions or for more info.

News from the Decatur Education Foundation
If you have a K-5th grade student, you likely saw our flyer last week that shows all the ways in which a donation to DEF can help Decatur students. We are not only working to solve the problems that our kids face, we’re also in the business of creating possibilities for students to reach their full potential. We cannot do that without the support of the community. You can help us with a year-end contribution in any amount (every dollar counts), at www.decatureducationfoundation.org/donate. Together we can make a difference for #OurKids! Thank you for your support.
Another way to give: You can donate to our Lighten the Load program which keeps the snack pantry stocked at Beacon Hill Middle School. For those families in our community experiencing food insecurity, we also have a weekend backpack program. Both have unique Amazon wish lists that are updated monthly. You can donate directly to them using these links:
