September is National Library Card Sign Up Month!

Everyone needs a library card from the public library! During the month of September, show us your library card and your name will be entered in a prize drawing! Teachers too! Don't have a card? NOW is a good time to get one! Visit the Lexington County Public Library and sign up! http://www.lex.lib.sc.us/

Dot Week!

Each year around September 15ish, students all around the world celebrate The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. Mrs. Yanssens and Mrs. Byrd Fort have been busy planning ways for our students to MAKE THEIR MARK the week of September 12! Students will read The Dot in Art with Mrs. Yanssens and will create artwork inspired by the book that we will display in the Learning Commons. When 1st - 5th grade students come to the LC for checkout during Dot Week, they will be able to choose from the following activities:

1. Scan Quiver Art dots

2. Play Dots & Co game on the iPad

3. Make their mark on a collaborative piece of art in the LC

Kindergarten students will participate in a DOT stacking project!

You can learn more about Dot Day here: http://www.thedotclub.org/dotday/

Global Cardboard Challenge/NPES Cardboard Carnival

It's that time of year again! It is time for the Global Cardboard Challenge! Inspired by Caine's Arcade (http://cainesarcade.com/), the Global Cardboard Challenge is a time for kids to create and have fun with cardboard! At NPES, we celebrate with a NPES Cardboard Carnival! Our 5th graders will start working on their carnival games this month. Our Cardboard Carnival will be on Friday, September 30. There will be a district-wide Cardboard Challenge at the Lexington Technology Center on October 1. More info coming soon!

Read Your Way to the Big Game!

We will once again READ OUR WAY TO THE BIG GAME! We are excited to participate in the 2nd Annual READ YOUR WAY TO THE BIG GAME READING CONTEST. This contest is sponsored by the Educational Oversight Committee and is a fun way to get students excited about reading! Students read 6 books, write down the titles and author on a reading log, and turn in the reading log for a chance to win tickets to the Palmetto Bowl! This contest will run from September 19 - October 19 and winners will be announced after November 1!

Makerspace Moments

Makerspace Moments is a time for students to create, explore, and learn. Each month our Makerspace has a Spotlight Activity...the September and October Spotlight Activity is (in honor of Caine's Arcade and the Global Cardboard Challenge) CARDBOARD!

We will start Makerspace Moments the week of September 19.

Makerspace Moments are Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 1:30pm in the Learning Commons!

Each classroom teacher will get 3 passes for students to come to the Makerspace. We will be giving you your passes and telling classes about MSM the week of September 12!

Global Read Aloud!

Want to connect with classes around the globe? Why not participate in the Global Read Aloud!? The Global Read Aloud takes place October 3 - November 11. Your class will read a book and then share with other classes around the world (or around our district) their thoughts...if you'd like to participate, visit this link: https://theglobalreadaloud.com/

Please let me know if you need help finding books or connections!

New Providence News Network (WPNN)

Over the summer, we received NEWS SHOW EQUIPMENT! We are excited to announce that we will have a LIVE morning news show beginning this month! The news show team will rotate between 5th grade classes. We will be learning and growing with each production. We appreciate you using the life skills of patience, support and encouragement while we get our show going! If you ever have anything you would like to announce on WPNN, please let Mrs. Sheely or Mrs. Byrd Fort know!

LifeSkills & Lifelong Guidelines SPOTLIGHT!

In September, we will work on ACTIVE LISTENING, PATIENCE and ORGANIZATION.

There is a display of books when you enter the Learning Commons. This display will be updated each month with books about the LifeSkills & Lifelong Guideline for the month.
