Game of Thrones Season 3 Episode 8:

It was only a matter of time until the psychopathic Joffrey got tired of his grandfather’s power-grab. In fact, the little bastard has been lying pretty low this season. Other than killing a whore here and there (Ros, we barely knew ye) or hoisting his crossbow with the help of Margaery, Joffrey’s been pretty subdued. He hasn’t tried to kill anyone in his family, he hasn’t started any more wars. In fact, things have been so calm that it’s unsettling. We’re all just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

From the looks of the preview this week, that’s all about to change. As terrifying as Tywin Lannister may be, even the most obedient children eventually rebel. Joffrey is many things, but obedient is not one of them. His pointed confrontation with his grandfather in the last episode didn’t exactly go as planned – but from the looks of this week’s preview, Joffrey has changed tactics. No longer calling Twyin to a civil meeting in the throne room, Joffrey faces him on even ground. But Tywin’s hold over Kings Landing is strong, and it will take more than a little tantrum for him to let it go.

Speaking of acting out, Danaerys Targaryen is hell-bent on picking a fight with the Yunkai. Bolstered by the sacking of Astapor, she’s developing a taste for blood – especially when spilling that blood means freeing those treated unjustly. It’s a dear payback for the years she spent as her brother’s object, a valuable keepsake to be traded for power. A stranger from Yunkai meets her in her tent, and it’s unclear whether this person ends up being a friend or foe. She has all the manpower she needs – and more – so what could this sell-sword offer her? Perhaps something else she’s been in dire need of since Khal Drogo’s passing…

After running directly into the hands of the Hound, Arya Stark doesn’t appear to have any plans to remain his meek captive. Unlike Gendry, whose fascination with the beautiful and powerful Melisandre has led him to a gilded cage. Stannis requires Gendry’s blood to appease his Lord of Light, and Melisandre is the priestess who will retrieve it.

But on the other side of the Wall, Sam and Gilly have been edging closer and closer to Castle Black. But as we’ve learned this season, The Night is Dark and Full of Terrors – even Gilly is wise enough to know not to venture more than a few steps away from the fire.

The confrontations we’ve been waiting for all season are nearly upon us. The eye of the storm that hovers over all the residents of Westeros is about to blow away.
