Special Thanks
Thank you to Ericka Thompson, Katie Hazlett, Kristin Elizabeth, Linda Kniep, and Robin Kiely for your assistance in setting up, coordinating and tearing down the "Minute to Win it" games during our Halloween Assembly. The students all really seemed to enjoy themselves and there was some great competition.
This week in math, we began working on 6th grade algebra and some math vocabulary. Ask your child if they know what the following words mean: sum, difference, product, and quotient (and as a bonus, “coefficient.”) We will start working on solving some basic equations next week, for example if 4x = 12, then what does x = ? We have been working on “Multiplication Mondays” for a while, and students are getting much stronger in their multiplication skills. When they are ready, they can take a short quiz on decimal multiplication and if they get an A+, they can move on to long division with me (including division with decimals) and we can keep working on more and more challenging skills. Students who still need more practice with multiplication can continue to practice. Please encourage your children to practice their math facts (what is 6 x 7? What is 5 x 8? etc) and if you can practice with them, that would be amazing! Aotto02@kibsd.org for any questions/comments. Homework is given out Monday and due Friday. Thanks and have a great weekend – Alex Otto
This week we’ve been making our way through Jane Goodall’s “My Life With the Chimpanzees”. We’ve been practicing summarizing what we’ve read, and learning some new vocabulary. Students will be learning a “proper” summarizing method next week and continuing to use our new vocabulary in their speech and writing. Don’t be surprised if you start hearing words like: vanished, impetuous, dominate, miserable, threateningly, or irritable in your student’s speech.
We spent this week honing our skills with latitude and longitude. Students are using atlases to help them find the absolute location of a place on Earth. They should have completed 3 practice worksheets during class time, and it became homework if they needed more time. We also learned the countries in Central America and students created hilarious mnemonic devices to present to the class to help them remember the countries. We ended the week with a Central America map activity and check in (quiz) on their understanding of absolute location.
This week concludes our unit on space. We spent the week learning about the history of space exploration and satellites. Next week we are going to start transitioning into talking about Earth and its formation.
Students are working to complete their wood lathe project, "Slimline pen" while others are starting on a traveling tic tac toe game.
We recently read aloud the mini biography Journey for Justice: The Life of Larry Itliong as we study Filipino American history with a focus on the skills of summarizing and using context clues. Students will select a notable or famous Filipino American for their own research and we will use two-column notes to learn about our subjects. Next, students will use technology to create their own mini biographies about their subjects, including key vocabulary with strong context clues.
In honor of Red Ribbon Week, we celebrated living our best and healthy life by having fun with our spirit week and assembly! Ms. Sheila presented in the skills and academic pursuits classrooms. During the presentation students learned how negative choices affect our bodies in a negative way (lowering our mental and physical strength). On the flip side, being kind to ourselves and others as well as choosing to live a drug-free life, we are strong and healthy! Ask your student about their participation in the strength test!
This week in GT, we reflected on expectations, and how expectations can shape our experiences in school and with peers. We discussed the importance of keeping a realistic perspective when managing expectations and understanding what we can control. We discussed the future direction of GT pullout based around student advocacy and planning learning experiences in areas of interest. If there is ever any way that I can support your student and their learning, please do not hesitate to reach out at kyle.deuling@kibsd.org!
