PRINCIPAL ANDERSON WELCOMES YOU TO THE 2023-24 SCHOOL YEAR
The 2023-24 school year is off to a really good start and it is filled with excitement, energy, high expectations, and spirit. Ultimately, we are here to serve. The staff at Glenbard East is committed to serve and support every student, every day in their quest to be a Glenbard East graduate that is self-empowered, thinks critically, embraces diversity, communicates, creates, and collaborates. That support and encouragement started when we welcomed freshmen students on August 11th during our new student orientation. With the help of our junior and senior Link Crew Mentors, the Class of 2027 participated in a variety of large and small group activities aimed at getting them acclimated with each other and Glenbard East. We, here on the East Side, welcome them with open arms and look forward to their growth in the years to come.
Our first full week of school exposed our students to a few new initiatives here at East. The first included the procedure of scanning into the building. As we prioritize safety and security, it is critical that we are able to identify and account for our students on a daily basis. Over the course of a few days we have seen our entry process become smoother and more efficient. In order for the process to be as efficient as possible it is important that students have their physical ID with them on a daily basis. Those without an ID will be expected to get a temporary one for the day.
In addition to the new entry process, we have been able to implement our new Ram Time (East’s version of Glenbard Hour). We are excited about the opportunities that Ram Time will provide to build community and for students to get the support they need to be successful during the school day. HERE you will find the Ram Time schedule for the 1st semester. As you will see on the calendar, our first support day will be on Friday, September 8th. More information about student support options will be forthcoming.
Our first two weeks of school culminated with an all-school assembly in our main gymnasium, this past Friday, August 25th. We were excited to be able to gather as an entire school community and celebrate the start of another school year. We truly look forward to creating additional memorable experiences for students throughout the year. Now, as we continue to settle into a rhythm and routine this school year, I wanted to share some important information with you.
Building Safety and Security
As mentioned previously, the safety of our students and staff remains our top priority. To that end, we are reinforcing a few safety measures. First, all adults in the building will be required to wear an ID. This includes building staff, visitors, and contractors. It is strongly recommended that students also wear their ID. All students were provided with a lanyard for their convenience. Additionally, students and staff are expected to exit the building through authorized doors. Students should only exit the building during the school day (7:35AM-2:35PM) via Door 1. Students that exit the building through unauthorized doors or allow others to enter the building through unauthorized doors compromise the safety of our school community and are subject to disciplinary action. Lastly, students are encouraged to report suspicious or alarming behaviors to school staff in a timely manner. Please reinforce this with your student as it is imperative that we all do our part to keep our building safe and secure.
PowerSchool App
The PowerSchool app is a great way to stay up-to-date on your student's grades and attendance. The PowerSchool app gives instant access to grades, scores, attendance and more. Real-time notifications mean you can stay connected to your student’s progress no matter where you are.
If you have previously used the PowerSchool app and can only see last year's courses, please delete the app and reinstall it again. You will need the District Code: TDPZ. Click here for more information about using the PowerSchool App.
Student Survey
District 87 has partnered with Equal Opportunity Schools in order to increase equitable opportunities for students in Advanced Placement and Dual Credit courses. On September 11, during Ram Time Homeroom, students will participate in taking a short survey. Reports generated from the survey provide trends on information, expectations, and belonging in our Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Credit programs. The Equal Opportunity Schools survey provides valuable insight about student strengths and challenges in accessing rigorous coursework, as well as data on student potential and interests.
Get Involved
Lastly, although your student’s high school experience is primarily about academics, involvement in extracurricular activities is vital to their overall success. Please encourage and challenge your student(s) to get involved in these activities at East. They have the privilege to choose from 31 sports and over 60 clubs and activities that our school has to offer. After school transportation is available to students who wish to participate in after school activities as we offer both 4:30pm and 6pm buses on Monday-Thursday as well as a 5pm bus on Friday. As I’ve stated on many occasions, there is something for everyone.
I look forward to another exciting school year and working with the families of Glenbard East. The 2023-24 school year promises to be an exciting one and I hope that your student(s) will enjoy their experience here at East.
WE Are East and Together WE Can!!!
OFF SITE EVACUATION DRILL SCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1
Our next planned safety drill day will take place on Friday, September 1, 2023. We have dedicated a significant amount of time in order to practice three drills that include Hold in Place, Lock Down, and an actual Evacuation of the building.
This year our students and staff will practice evacuating the building with the assistance of the Lombard Police Department and will walk down East Wilson Avenue to our Evacuation Site, at Madison Meadows Athletic Complex. Our students and staff will then turn around and go back to Glenbard East High School using the same route. The Lombard Police Department will also assist and assess our Hold in Place and Lockdown Drills.
2023-24 AT A GLANCE CALENDAR
NEW BELL SCHEDULE
REMINDER: PARENT OPEN HOUSE AUGUST 31
Parent/Guardian Open House will take place on Thursday, August 31. We will kick off the evening at 5:15PM with an optional presentation by our Student Services staff titled Teen Mental Health 101. This presentation will cover the impact of social media on mental health. Emotion regulation in teens and the long term effects of stress. We will also include practical mental health management tips for parents. Class visits will run from 6:05 to 8:15PM. This evening is an invitation to walk through Glenbard East’s facilities, meet teachers, learn about the content of your child’s courses as well as teacher expectations and discover ways you can help your child succeed at East. We urge you to participate in this important introduction to your student’s school year. Click the link for the 2023 Open House schedule with more details.
Please note: There will be a 12:35PM dismissal for students on Friday, September 1.
MAKE ATTENDANCE A PRIORITY
September is National Attendance Awareness Month and we can’t stress enough the importance of students being in school every day and on time. Showing up to school and showing up on time matters. A few missed days here and there, even if they are excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and put students behind in school. As a school community we must reduce our chronic absenteeism rate, which was last reported to be approximately 35%. A student is considered chronically absent if they miss at least 10% (18 days) of school during a typical school year. Together We Can reduce our chronic absenteeism rate by increasing our daily average attendance (ADA). Our goal is to increase our ADA to 94% over the next two years. Please prioritize your student’s attendance when making scheduling plans. Additionally, if a student is healthy, they should be in school. Click HERE for ideas of how you can make attendance a priority for your student(s). Let’s show up together. Your assistance is needed.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Not surprisingly, research indicates that students perform better in their coursework when they attend classes regularly. And while we realize that occasional absences are a reality in schools, we
believe that excessive absence negatively impacts student learning. We hope that, as parents, you agree and will assist us by doing your part in sending your child to school on a daily basis. In an effort to decrease excessive absences, Glenbard East has instituted the following attendance policy:
- Any student who is absent for more than twelve (12) days, excused or unexcused, in one semester, will be considered as having excessive absences. These absences do not include those that result from participation in school-approved activities such as field trips. Once the student has accrued twelve absences, any additional absences within the semester will not be cleared without a doctor's note.
- Furthermore, once a student is absent 15 days in a semester (discounting field trips and other school-approved absences), the student may be in danger of not earning credit for the semester and/or may be withdrawn from classes for excessive unexcused absences.
DEANS DEPARTMENT UPDATE
Greetings from the Glenbard East Dean’s Department!
We are pleased to introduce two new Dean of students who will be joining us for the school year; Ashley Perisee and Charles Hinriksson. Both are veteran educators and fully bilingual in English and Spanish. Dean Hinriksson will be working to support students with excessive attendance issues and Dean Perisee will be taking over Dean Hernandez’s case load. Please see below for our student intervention team plan for the 2023-24 school year.
Here is our Student Intervention Team (S.I.T.) organizational plan for the 2023-24 academic year:
STUDENT ID'S
It is recommended that all students wear their student ID when they report to school and at extracurricular events. This is a very important safety measure as we need to ensure that everyone in the building can be properly identified. ID’s are also required to purchase lunch, check in to various offices throughout thebuilding, and ride the bus to and from school. Repeated failure to present a valid student ID may result in disciplinary consequences.
DRESS FOR SUCCESS
Student appearance guidelines are clearly articulated in the student handbook. Dress or appearance cannot be disruptive to the educational program or contain vulgarity, obscenity, or promote excessive violence or illegal activities, such as alcohol, tobacco products, drugs/drug use. Dress code violations will be referred to the Dean’s office. We ask that parents help us by being attentive to these regulations.
LATEX ALLERGIES
Schools across the nation are experiencing more and more students who have latex allergies. Often, students with this allergy can have severe and even life-threatening reactions if exposed to latex resins and powders. For their safety, there are certain latex products we no longer allow on campus. Latex balloons and “SillyString” pose a significant health threat to students with a latex allergy. These products are not allowed on campus at any time, including after school, evening, and weekend events. With this in mind, we request your help: Please talk with your children about this health and safety issue. Some students might not understand the reason for a “balloon ban.” At East, we want all parents to know that their children are safe on campus.
RULES FOR STUDENTS TAKING MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
Students are not allowed to take prescription or nonprescription medications at school until their physician and parent/guardian complete and submit the School Medication Permission Form to the school nurse. This form is available from the Health Office or it may be printed from the Glenbard East Nurse website.
Prescription medication should be brought to the Health Office in a container labeled by the pharmacy that includes:
1) The name of the student
2) The name of the medication
3) The dosage
4) and the time and route of administration
Nonprescription medication (Motrin, Advil, Tylenol, etc.) should remain in the original container and be labeled with the student’s name.
Students are not allowed to carry any medication while at school except prescribed asthma inhalers, EpiPens, insulin or Glucagon pens. Students carrying these medications also need to submit to the school nurse an individualized Emergency Action Plan signed by their physician. If You have further questions, please phone the Health Office at 630-424-7133 and ask to speak with one of the nurses.
LEARN ABOUT OUR LONG-RANGE FACILITY PLAN AT COMMUNITY FORUM
As part of our facility planning process, Glenbard East will host a Facility Planning Community Forum to share information about our district-wide facility needs and development of a new 10-year facility plan to address those needs.
East’s Facility Planning Community Forum will be an open house format from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 20 at Glenbard East. Please plan to join us.
Glenbard’s four high schools, which range in age from 50 to 100 years old, continue to have numerous capital improvement needs. We are excited about developing a new 10-year facility plan. The plan will consider instructional best practice, safety and opportunities to connect and collaborate. Additional funding will be necessary to implement the new facility plan.
Learn more at this link.
Development of new 10-year facility plan
- Necessary warm/safe/dry projects (roofs, parking lots, boilers, cooling units, etc.)
- Safety and access upgrades (doors, hardware, entrances, access to administrative offices, etc.)
- Renovation of science labs and restrooms
- Wold Architects & Engineers and Performance Services, Inc. will maintain community asset.
Funding Sources
· Through sound fiscal stewardship, we continue budgeting dollars for the new ten-year master facility plan.
· Alternate revenue source (ARS) bonds will accelerate projects from the 2013 master facility plan, such as renovations to science labs and restrooms.
o Our ARS bonds are expiring, and we approved issuing a new series of ARS bonds that will total about $29 million of debt within our operating budgets.
o Will not increase the district’s tax rate
· A referendum is necessary to provide the remaining needed funds.
Key points
- Facility improvements are necessary to support instructional environments.
- Without a large, one-time revenue source, some improvements are not possible.
- Construction costs will increase, but efficient borrowing yields a high return on investment.
- Instructional spaces demand attention, but lack of funding postpones improvements.
- D87 facilities – particularly entrances, cafeterias and collaboration spaces – are behind peer districts.
- In 2014, D87 committed to $100 million over 10 years; however, we exceeded that commitment by spending $154 million over the past 10 years ($35 million from 2014 referendum) while maintaining balanced budgets.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) EXAMS
It is an expectation at Glenbard that any students enrolled in an AP course will also take the course AP exam in May. The cost of a student’s AP exam(s) is factored into school registration fees at the beginning of the school year. The D87 School Board has made the investment to pay for one AP exam for every Glenbard student every year. All subsequent exams are $98—except AP Seminar and AP Research, which are $146.
To officially register for each AP exam, students must join the My AP classroom for each of their AP courses. My AP is a College Board website where students register for exams, access course resources, and see their exam scores. To register students use a specific join code provided by their teacher. Click here for a quick video on how to join your AP class section. Students are not registered for the exam(s) until they do so. We ask all AP teachers to complete this process with their students in the first month of the school year.
If your student drops an AP class, the student’s balance will automatically be updated to reflect the change. The exam fee will be credited in full until College Board’s November 15th deadline. After this date, families will receive a partial credit (exam cost minus a $40 cancelled exam fee).
If there are extenuating circumstances, families can withdraw from the exam without financial penalty by November 15, 2023, for full year AP courses or March 15, 2024, for 2nd semester only AP courses by notifying their school counselor or the AP Coordinator, Beth McNett. Partial credit (exam cost minus a $40 cancelled exam fee) may be available until April 19. Students who are absent on test day will be offered the option of late testing, but will not be eligible for a refund.
If you have questions about AP Exams, feel free to contact your student's counselor or AP Coordinator, Beth McNett at beth_mcnett@glenbard.org. You may also reach out to Joan Witkus, Assistant Principal for Instruction.
SETTING UP YOUR COLLEGE BOARD ACCOUNT
All Freshman-Seniors should have a College Board Account. This account allows students to enroll in their AP Class and register to take AP exams, view scores, track progress on the PSAT and SAT, and send scores to colleges and universities. Directions on setting up individual college board accounts can be found here: Setting Up Your College Board Account Link
Students should already have a College Board Account and login after taking the PSAT in 8th grade. Please do not create a second account! This can create problems in the future when sending scores to colleges. Here are some helpful hints as you review your College Board account:
- Check that it is the student's full legal name (i.e., Patricia, not Patty) on the account.
- Use a student personal email address instead of a school email address. School email is eventually inactivated. Using a personal email address maintains access. It is highly recommended to change it if necessary.
- If you have trouble accessing the account, please contact College Board directly at (866)-630-9305. We are very limited in what we can do to help with account access.
- Students can save their College Board login somewhere in their phones - in notes or photos. They will use it multiple times in high school, so they will want to keep it safe and accessible.
If you have any questions, please contact your student’s counselor.

GLENBARD EAST STUDENTS VISIT FRANCE
This past summer 20 Glenbard East students and 3 teachers had the amazing opportunity to spend 10 glorious days in France! We left Chicago on a direct flight to Paris. Upon our arrival we had 3 jam packed and memorable days touring the city of lights, eating croissants, and making memories that will last a lifetime. From Paris, we hopped on a train East to the city of Strasbourg. Students loved the relaxed ambiance and feel of the city. We ate schnitzel, took a river cruise, and climbed to the top of one of France's tallest cathedrals. From Strasbourg we went south stopping in the gorgeous cities of Annecy and Dijon. In Dijon we visited an active mustard mill and had the chance to not only sample, but create some mustard of our own and everyone found some souvenir mustards! We ended our trip in the bustling, gastronomical, and historic city of Lyon. Lyon being one of the world's oldest cities has been named a UNESCO world heritage site. We toured secret medieval passageways through the city that were integral to the resistance movement in World War II. We took a food tour and learned about the city's rich food culture. Students report back that they were amazed and proud to see all of their hard work over the years pay off, as they communicated in French and navigated the culture with great success! It goes without saying that we are already excited about our next trip!! Destination… Stay tuned!! Interested in joining us?! Be sure to talk to your counselor about signing up for French!

SUPERINTENDENT DR DAVID LARSON OUTLINES WAYS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS
The start of a new school year is filled with limitless possibilities and new learning opportunities. There are a variety of ways families can support and guide students throughout the year.
Here are a few ways to support students:
Provide support at home
- Help your teen get organized
- Share time management tips
- Encourage good study habits
- Discuss assignments
- Be interested
- Offer specific praise for hard work
- Watch for frustration
- Establish a regular time for homework
- Choose a place to do homework and remove distractions
- Encourage your student to connect to school by getting involved in a sport, club or activity.
Tap into resources, opportunities of Glenbard Hour
The Glenbard Hour is a feature of our new school day schedule. During the twice weekly Glenbard Hour, every teacher and every student will be involved in making choices; seeking help; getting involved in physical activities; learning new concepts and gaining new skills. This dedicated time each week will allow students to access their teachers for the support they need to experience academic success. It also will reduce the need for students to arrive early or stay after school to seek assistance.
Encourage your student to tap into the many resources and opportunities available through the Glenbard Hour each week.
Take advantage of free Glenbard Parent Series events
We are so fortunate to have the Glenbard Parent Series (GPS) Navigating Healthy Families, which provides families with support and tips from national parenting experts and local educators. Each week, GPS speakers discuss a range of topics that all families face as teens make their way through adolescence to adulthood. Check out the list of free GPS programs and get the webinar links at Glenbardgps.org.
We partner with families to support students and prepare them for a bright future brimming with possibilities.
