Dear Rock Creek Families,
Have you heard about the community circles that your student participates in at our school? Circles are a powerful learning tool that we use to support all of our students in connecting, building relationships and regulating their emotions. Most classes participate in daily circles, usually at the start of their day. During circle time, students build trust and do community building. Students find that through this dedicated time their class makes connections and students learn to take risks as the community strengthens.
This is perhaps, one of the most important parts of the school day, especially right now, as we are all processing the challenges of living through a pandemic. When our students are regulated and feel connected with their classmates and teacher, then they are ready for academic learning.
We teach the whole child at Rock Creek. This is not just a catch-phrase. It is real and crucial. Throughout their lives, our students will encounter challenges and we are working to give the skills and practice of the skills to help them to work through challenges successfully.
If you would like to start circles at home, here are some ideas to get started. Remember that when you model genuine curiosity and willingness to share your thoughts with your kids, they will gain so much and grow from learning about you!

We are required to track all student absences and illness symptoms. When calling in your student's absence please leave detailed information ie. if your student is ill and has a fever or not, if they have a cough or not, vomiting, etc and the date symptoms started. Also, please contact us if students will be on vacation or have an appointment.If we do not have detailed information we are required to call parents. IMMUNIZATION EXCLUSION DAY- FEBRUARY 16, 2022
As outlined on the Oregon Secretary of State’s website, students who are not up-to-date on required immunizations will be excluded from valuable instruction time due to the state-mandated immunization exclusion day on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2022.
The statewide exclusion applies to all children enrolled for five or more days per school year in a school or preschool or five or more days per calendar year in other children’s facilities.
More information, including a full list of required immunizations for the 2021-22 school year can be found on the district website’s Health and Immunizations webpage.
If you did not receive a letter from Oregon Health Authority, Washington County or Rock Creek, your child's immunizations are up to date and will not be excluded from school. If you have questions, please call Jessica at 503-356-2452.
IMPORTANT ENROLLED OHSU TESTING STUDENTS-PLEASE READ!!
With the omicron variant surging, we are seeing more students testing positive for COVID. Those students who test positive should not participate in our program for 90 days after receiving their results, as they will continue to test positive during this time period. These repeat positive tests consume testing supplies and staff time, and distract us from helping students who are healthy or are just being diagnosed with COVID for the first time. Students with a positive result do not need to opt-out of the program, but they do need to pause their participation until the 90-day period has ended.
We need to once again emphasize the importance of correctly labeling specimens. Labels must contain both the student’s full name and date of birth in order to be processed by our lab.
This is a program-wide issue, and we received 400 specimens within the last 10 days that were handwritten with no date of birth provided. These tests were all cancelled and discarded due to not including two unique identifiers. On Monday alone, we received 49 tests without a label of any kind. We want to avoid this unfortunate situation in the future and make sure that we can test all specimens that we receive.
Printed labels should be used whenever possible. All enrolled students should have received barcoded labels from OHSU. If/when handwritten labels do need to be used, please review the attached instructions again, and note the following.
- Names should be written in the format of ‘Last Name, First Name’ (with no abbreviations or initials)
- Dates of birth should be written in the format of ‘mm/dd/yyyy’
- Providing the school name is helpful, but not required

Round 2 battles dates are Feb 2 and Feb 7.
All parents should have received an email prior to the Mock Battles. Please keep this email as it holds links to all of your student's battles. In addition, teams with Feb 7 battles will receive a reminder email this week. It will include the zoom link again, for your reference. Please ensure that your student logs on to the correct zoom meeting 3-5 minutes prior to their battles.
Team totals from round 1 and round 2 will be added together to determine the top 16 teams that will move on to our bracket play rounds. These will begin on Feb 15.

PTC MEETING-NEXT WEEK!
We are looking forward to the PTC Meeting next week! The February monthly meeting is full of exciting updates about the upcoming Valentine Friendship parties, showing "love" to our amazing teachers and staff, and even meeting some of the new teachers! Principal Wiencken will be there to give updates from the school and to talk about the new blended class we have for 3rd and 4th graders.

A note from the PTC President:
Since 2022 is bustling along and we're five months to the end of the school year, I wanted to mention a few things.
First, thanks to all of the volunteers who have been working on the class parties, school digital directory, dropping off snacks, volunteering on the board, leading OBOB, and helping out teachers and staff with projects that come up. It takes a community and ours is doing amazing things!
Second, we have some important things coming up in the next few PTC meetings that I encourage you to put on your calendar:
February 10th - Principal Update on the new 3rd & 4th grades blended class, plus a Meet & Greet with new teachers to Rock Creek
March 15th - a representative from the BSD Bond Team will present about the upcoming bond proposal
April 19th - spring events and open positions for the PTC Board 2022-2023 school year
May 19th - PTC Board Elections
June 14th - last meeting of the school year and introduction of new board members
Any event or project that the PTC takes on relies on volunteers to make it happen. We are grateful for your involvement and support whether it is a few hours from home, an on-going role, on campus drop-offs of materials, etc. Thank you for volunteering! You make a difference.
Lastly, it is my hope that as weather improves, so will the metrics so that we can look forward to reconvening in-person, likely outside, for a meeting. Until then, join us via Zoom at 6:30 p.m. on the above dates (the zoom link is sent via ParentSquare). Each parent/guardian of a Rock Creek Elementary student is invited to attend the meetings and is a welcome member of the Parent Teacher Club. We are stronger together!

5TH GRADE SEND-OFF COMMITTEE
All Rock Creek Parents are automatically members of the Parent Teacher Club (PTC). The PTC is a great way to learn about the exciting things happening at Rock Creek. CAR/WALKER ARRIVAL TIME 8:20 AM- CLASSROOM DOORS LOCK AT 8:30 AM
For the safety of our students, students that are parent drop off, walkers and bike riders are not to arrive before 8:20 am. Bus riders arrive at 8:15 am because the school buses need to leave earlier to pick up middle school students. Classroom doors do not open until 8:20 am. We do not have space or the supervision for all students to safely line up outside the doors until 8:20 am.
Classroom doors shut and lock at 8:30 am. If your child is not in the classroom by 8:30 am, please walk them to the main front doors and ring the doorbell. Staff will escort them to class.
TOY AND CELL PHONE/SMART WATCH POLICY
Toys (including footballs, basketballs, soccer balls etc.) are to be left at home. This includes any type of playing/trading cards, balls, dolls and electronic toys etc. No personal toys/balls at recess at any time. Any toy that represents a weapon is NOT to be brought to school at any time. If found, it will be confiscated and parents will be notified.
Latex balloons are not allowed in school. No balloons are allowed on the bus.
Cell Phones/Smart Watches
Cell phones/Smart watch and other electronic devices are not to be used at school. If your family needs you to have a phone for safety, it must be turned off and put away as soon as you arrive at school. If you bring out your phone /smart watch or use it without permission at school, an adult will take it away. Your parent will need to come to the office and pick it up.
Why is Play so Important?
You may have noticed that your child is engaging in online playdates or playful inquiry in school. At a time when we are all worried about our children, we might feel like children should be working on more “academic” things when they are attending synchronous time. This workshop and document is to help you understand why these play experiences are so important for your child and their future.
Play Helps Children Build Social Competence (and social competency is essential for success in life)
Research studies have found that social skills are a better predictor of long term success than academic skills. This is because in order to be successful academically, children need to learn how to share, work together, problem solve, rebound from failure. Play provides an opportunity to build this “infrastructure” for a lifetime of learning.
Play Helps Children Process Stress and Anxiety
Children often “play out” the things they feel anxious or stressed about. In playing scenarios that tackle the things they fear, children can feel like they have power and agency. In fact, Lawrence Cohen writes that children often play powerfully, “to overcome feelings of powerlessness”. Without this opportunity, children may have more issues with paying attention, focusing, and handling the big feelings we are all having right now. If your child is engaging in weapon play, that is also normal. There is no evidence linking weapon play to later violence.
Play Helps Children Build Academic Skills in an Engaging Way
Young children are experiential, which means they learn better through concrete, real experiences than just hearing about those things (think about all the times you asked your child not to do something, then they do it anyway and only then realize WHY you said not to). Play and playful inquiry give opportunities to experience important parts of literacy and math in meaningful ways. Sarah Lewis notes a study that ⅓ of all time playing is spent discovering and applying concepts in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Some of the most important literacy work your child is learning at this age is how to retell stories, and sequence their own stories. Children at play can often do this at very sophisticated levels. The stories your child plays become the stories they write.
Play Helps Children Build Their Brain and MemoryExecutive functions are the skills that enable us to wait patiently, solve multi-step problems, and remember the grocery list when we are at the store. Everyone is born with the ability to develop these skills, but they must be nurtured and fostered. Research teaches us that when children are young, play is the most effective way to develop these essential brain functions.
AUTHORIZATION FOR COVID TESTING IN SCHOOL
The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) supports COVID-19 testing in public and private K-12 schools in Oregon for students and staff who display symptoms of COVID-19. The Beaverton School District has registered to have Abbott BinaxNOW rapid antigen testing available for students and staff who develop primary symptoms of COVID-19 at school. Primary symptoms of Covid-19 include:
New or different than usual shortness of breath
New or different than usual coughing
Fever of 100.4 or higher
New loss of taste or smell.
The Abbott BinaxNOW test will only be administered to students who have consent from their parent(s) or legal guardian on file. The student must be capable and willing to perform a nasal swab test independently. The parent(s) or guardian can decline testing and opt to test their child with a healthcare provider. If there is any doubt as to whether a specimen may be safely self-collected by an individual, they should be referred to their healthcare provider for COVID-19 testing. Positive test results will be shared with the Local Public Health Authority to assist in contact tracing.

COVID VACCINATION UPLOAD INSTRUCTIONS
Vaccination Upload Instructions
We strongly encourage all students to get vaccinated as it’s the most effective way to mitigate the risk of COVID-19.
After your student receives the second dose, it’s critical that you take the time to upload the vaccination card as part of the Online Verification Process. Even if you completed the process at the beginning of the year, you can go back and upload. Otherwise, our staff has to spend a substantial amount of time determining vaccination status when doing contact tracing. Vaccinated students who are asymptomatic do NOT need to quarantine even if they’re determined to be a close contact.
To input your vaccination dates and upload your student’s card with both doses recorded, login to ParentVUE. Select “Family Updates and New Student Enrollment” in the upper right hand corner. You’ll then select “2021-2022 Vaccination Card Upload” from the dropdown menu in the blue box at the bottom of the screen.

BIRTHDAY TREATS AND INVITATIONS
Birthday treats /prizes not to be brought to school.
Due to student allergies, equity and the number of birthdays we celebrate each month we do not allow birthday treats/prizes at school. We will however, be recognizing and celebrating birthdays on their special day in other special ways!
We also ask that private birthday party invitations or other type of private invitations NOT be delivered and distributed at school. This can lead to hurt feelings among students. Please make an effort to deliver these important messages in another manner.

Walk and Bike: It’s Good for Your Heart!
Whether you walk or bike a few blocks to school or close to a mile, your active commute is good for your heart, your whole body and it’s invigorating and fun!
With colder winter weather, children spend less time playing outside, but a nice brisk walk or bike ride to school will help achieve their recommended 60
minutes of moderate exercise every day. This will help prevent childhood obesity and support healthy bones.
Walking and biking to school is also a great way for kids to get the physical activity needed for healthy minds. Kids who are more physically active have better academic performance. Studies are beginning to show that exposure to nature and free outdoor play can reduce stress and relieve ADHD symptoms. If that isn’t enough to get you out of your car, think about the air quality around a school when dozens of parents sit in idling cars while their children jump out. Air pollution has contributed to childhood asthma rates doubling between 1980 and the mid- 1990s. Asthma rates remain at historically high levels and cause 14 million missed school days every year. Walking and biking to school is healthy for kids, healthy for communities, and healthy for the planet.
Very Important: Please label your students coats, hats, lunch boxes, water bottles etc with their names.
School closure or delayed start decisions typically will be communicated to media outlets and posted on the District website, ParentSquare, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter by 5:30 a.m.
