80.4%
80.4% that is the current percentage of students receiving Free and or Reduced lunch at Miller. This is the highest percentage in the history of Miller. What does this mean? This means we are serving a high populations of students that are living in impoverished homes. These are students whose parent struggle day to day to provide basic needs. As educators, we are the gateway that opens the opportunity for many of our students to end the cycle of poverty. Some steps we can take as we embark upon this challenging journey are:
- switch our thinking from "these kids" to "our kids"
- take advice from educators that have been and are successful
- learn from each other - we have many successful stories in our building
- study and implement strategies from experts - Eric Jensen, YouTube (Educating Black Boys), Twitter (Poverty in Education, Education vs Poverty)
- build relationships, plan for every minute, give 100%
Our average attendance rate is 97%. This means our students and their families believe we provide the best educational experience for their children.
This is 100% TRUE!
